The Oscars

See if I care that the Oscars are old news.

What’s that, LOTR haters? Eleven awards? Hm? What’s that you say? The Academy members are dunces?

Well, yes. Yes they are. Everyone seems to have forgotten 2002 and 2003 since last Sunday. It’s obvious that the Academy just figured that they might as well give LOTR eleven awards, to shut up the fans. It was its last year at the Oscars, after all.

I’m not complaining; of course I’m not. I switched on my TV on Monday morning to the sound of ‘It was a great night for New Zealand…’ and actually squealed. It put me in a good mood for the whole day. If anything, I’m a little perplexed as to why I still hate the Academy with a passion. I thought that if ROTK won I would put all quibbles behind me. But no. Apparently I am one to bear a grudge. Damn that Academy for ignoring FOTR and TTT. Especially the Fellowship, that really deserved to win ‘Best Picture’.

Anyway, who cares? Eleven awards. That’s no mean feat. Especially for a New Zealand fantasy film. I was especially pleased for Peter Jackson, after he was cruelly spurned at the BAFTAS.

The Oscars were considerably more entertaining this year than the year before last. (I didn’t watch them in 2003- the most farcical year of them all.) Billy Crystal was almost funny at times.

The opening sequence was so MTV- esque that I almost cried. Honestly, I thought that Billy Crystal dressed as Gollum was the most disturbing thing I had ever seen.

Then I saw Billy Crystal dressed as Legolas. Thanks for the memories.

The songs for each film were quite good. I like the mocking of Clint Eastwood (a little bit of friendly mocking never did anyone any harm), although I think Billy Crystal was wrong. Clint clearly is dead. He certainly looked it the other night anyway- pale, motionless and resembling Michael Douglas. I’m thinking: Corpse.

Rene Zelewegger managed to annoy the hell out of me. How long did it take her to get up to the stage?

(The less said about Catherine Zeta Jones the better.)

Tim Robbins: Totally indifferent to the man.

I don’t know what to make of Charlize Theron. She’s just… I don’t know. I honestly can’t say whether I like her or not. I like her complete lack of bosom though. I can empathise there. But other than that… I just don’t know.

Sean Penn’s standing ovation was cute. He’s cute. Proof that ugly men can succeed and somehow manage to look sexy at the same time…

(Which probably makes him a not- so- ugly man.)

And Liv Tyler is short- sighted! Well, like all the cool people, of course. Quirky glasses. Yay short- sightedness!

Yay for the Cork Chernobyl Project, the film about their work won in the ‘Best Short Documentary’ category.

Other than that, the Irish didn’t win anything. No awards for ‘In America’. But I don’t care, because…

‘The Return of the King’ won an award for each ending. And Elijah Wood was crying, the twat.

So, despite the down beat review, I did actually enjoy the Oscars this year. It just doesn’t seem that way.

What can I say? I’m a bitter person.
