I'm soliciting advice from anyone who has anything to say on digital cameras. Best brands? Any help anyone can give me would be great. I've already got a good idea of what I want, and although it will be a long, long while until I actually invest, I'd really appreciate input of any kind.

Not a professional opinion, but culled from personal experience and what I've read from some photographers whose work I like.

I've owned two Nikons and been happy with them. My digital is not an SLR though. I have been looking at digital SLRs and am considering trying a Canon as my next purchase. If you can afford it and want to do more than point and shoot, I would recommend trying to get a digital SLR. While I've been really happy with my Coolpix, I'm feeling there's a real lacking in terms of the depth of field.
