Toph had something of mine that I thought I'd lost, that's very important to me, very precious, something that I haven't seen in a long, long time. She wouldn't give it to me until I found out what happened to her friends. The staff told her what happened, but she didn't believe them. So I gave her the first names I thought of, five of them- I figured a group was more plausible than one person doing it. It's not anything personal, it's just... I wanted, I needed it back, and this was the only way for me to get it. She didn't believe the staff when they told her- why would she believe me when I told her the same thing they did? So I lied.

Just put yourself in my place, mate. Just this once.

If it's a fucking joke, it's one that's not particularly funny. Generally you have to understand them to be amused by them.
