If the child is over the age of 18 and not furthering his/her education or working on bettering his/her situation, then I think he/she should be required to pay rent.

I had to start paying when I was 17(but I also had 2 kids, so that made a difference in my parents eyes).
I think 18 is the perfect age. Regardless of going to school, working full time, being a adult is taking responsibility for yourself, and living off mommy and daddy isnt doing that at all. Saving for a house isnt an excuse to help out with rent. I graduted HS while working full time at target AND had to pay 450 in rent every month, as well as help out with food and other bills.
Alot of my friends think my parents were "Cruel" for doing that, but I dont at all. They were teaching me to be responsible and grow up, and that the only person I can ever truly rely on is myself.

Personally, if will do as my parents have done. As long as I am in school, I dont have to pay rent. thats because I work all year and summer just to be able to pay tuition and gas etc to get to work and school. If I had to pay rent, I might as well move out and have a whole apartment, instead of just a room.

My mom has also supplied Sarah and I with a car to share and pays our insurance (even after a few accidents). I dont know if I could do that for my kids....I will try though.

Well going on personal experience, I moved out when I was 19 and had just started university. My parents didn't make me pay rent prior to moving out, and I know that even if I would have decided to live with them throughout the duration of university, they wouldn't have made me pay rent. Personally, I think if someone is in school, it's understandable that they are in a tight place financially, and shouldn't have to pay rent. As long as they are trying to further themselves, I don't really think it's fair for the parents to expect them to burn the candles at both ends and try to work and earn enough for rent on top of studying their ass off. (Provided the parents are financially stable enough to support their child throughout school, of course ( ... )

Oh, I remembered some other things I wanted to say. I think before the child actually starts college or university, they should come to some arranagement with the parents. I don't think it's right of them to say "Well I'm in school, so you automatically have to pay." I think they should have some sort of mutual agreement that instead of paying rent, they should help out around the house and do certain chores on a schedule or something like that. If I had chosen to live with my parents, that's the way it would have worked with them. I don't think being a student lets someone off the hook completely - there still has to be some sort of help there. I mention this because I know so many people who lived with their parents throughout the 4 years of university, and didn't lift a finger. In my opinion, that's just wrong.

My mom made me pay rent as soon as I turned 18, $200 a month, then she kicked me out because I wasn't paying it (among other reasons ( ... )
