[someone as clever as Near - or even someone with half Near's wits - would notice that Canaan takes only a few seconds per page; but he pauses in flipping through and looks over the top of the book when he's spoken to.]

'Numbers and Infinity: A Historical Account of Mathematical Concepts' There's a lot I don't know about the history of the information that makes up my world. We know it, but we don't always know how it was discovered . . . much of that was lost. Camp is giving me the unique opportunity to learn it.

That makes sense. We care much more about making progress than recording how we got there.
