Co-opted paganism.

I'm not one to impinge on people's faiths, or to demand they practice theirs in the same way I do mine.

But so help me, I went to a mall today and ran into about 900....fluffbunny pagans.  All of them wearing pentagrams/pentacles (couldn't have explained what the damn things meant if they tried), all of them clutching little fairy notebooks from Hot ( Read more... )

I wouldn't have tried to stop myself. I just would have let myself laugh and kept laughing the whole way through.

The whole phenomenon that is Hot Topic sort of blows my mind. They've essentially co-opted every countercultural movement they can think of and marketed the fuck out of it. And in doing so have become so impossibly mainstream that the only way I could bring myself to wear something from the place is to make a profoundly ironic statement.

It does happen to everybody! It just saddens me to see it happen at younger and younger ages to kids (girls in particular) who just seem to think it's the only way they have any social value.

I like your rants!
