In general, men are such visual creatures by nature...they want to see the naked girl having sex rather than write or read about it. So I think that is the basic reason there are more female fan fiction writers out there....we tend to want to explore every thought, every action and every nuance of a character that we love. It goes way deeper than the visual for us. And wow wasn't that gender bias of me. *laughs*
Yeah it is. As a writer of fan fiction I'm on the side that it is good for fandom (whatever it may be), that it helps promote and extend the popularity of the book/movie/whatever. I wonder if I'd feel the same if fan fiction was being written about characters I created....hmmm. I know I get pretty annoyed when people use my graphics without permission or credit. But I suppose the icons & such are just another form of fan fiction, aren't they? I think I would be okay with it, knowing how much I enjoy reading & writing it.
Oooh...now see, you are making me think! *laughs* I completely agree about the graphics - especially if someone takes a design that I made and they alter it without my permission. Fan Fiction could certainly be viewed the same way. I know that GRRM has openly stated that he does not like Fan Fiction and has asked his fans too NOT write Game of Thrones fics. Of course they do anyways.
To be perfectly honest, I probably would feel uncomfortable should another writer take one of my original characters and write fiction on their own. BUT I would feel honored that something I created so inspired someone else....so I'm torn.
*laughs* It's actually a very complex thing and would make for a very long and in depth discussion/debate.
