And commenting here because I don't have no Tumblr: thistles are a national symbol of Scotland, not necessarily of royalty. According to ye olde Wikipedia, it "is an ancient Celtic symbol of nobility of character as well as of birth, for the wounding or provocation of a thistle yields punishment." There's also a chivalrous Order of the Thistle in Scotland.
