German Sex Educators Plan Spray-On Condom
Reuters
BERLIN (Nov. 30) - German sex educators plan to launch a spray-on condom tailor-made for all sizes.

Jan Vinzenz Krause from the Institute for Condom Consultancy, a Singen-based practice that offers advice on condom use, told Reuters on Thursday the product aimed to help people enjoy better and safer sex lives.

"We're trying to develop the perfect condom for men that's suited to every size of penis," he said. "We're very serious."

Krause's team (spraykondom.de) is developing a type of spray can into which the man inserts his penis first. At the push of a button it is then coated in a rubber condom.

"It works by spraying on latex from nozzles on all sides," he said. "We call it the '360 degree procedure' -- once round and from top to bottom. It's a bit like a car wash."

Krause said the plan is to make the product ready for use in about five seconds. He said it would function more effectively as a contraceptive because it would fit better and not slip.

However, before the new condom can be sold in shops, the firm must ensure that the latex is evenly spread when sprayed, as well as optimize the vulcanization process.

Krause hopes the high tech condom, which will be available in different strengths and colors, will on the market by 2008.

He said the spray can would likely cost some 20 euros ($26) as a one-off purchase. The latex cartridges -- sufficient for up to 20 applications -- would cost roughly 10 euros, he said.

Krause said he had hit upon the idea when considering the difficulties some people faced using condoms, and drew inspiration from spray-on plasters now used in medicine.

So I'm sitting here reading this. Now, I've never had to deal with condoms, so I can't say I really have much say on the whole condom experience. Monagomy and a little pill go a long way. But my guy tells me that condoms are annoying and just plain awful, and having read some literature on the subject, I'd have to say that most men would say the same. And from what I've learned of men, that particular part of the body is rather sensitive.

So I'm thinking about this spray on condom. Wouldn't that be uber painful? And what about removing it? The guy would have to PEEL it off! I mean, we're not talking the skin of hands, where something spray on can be peeled off with minimal pain... we're talking about spraying on a very thin coating of latex onto a guy's penis, then sex, followed by PEELING this crap off! What if it's like glue, and it comes off in strips or flakes?

And what about the girl? Latex is a solid, is it not? In order to get it to be sprayed, it has to be combined with something that will make it liquid. Then it gets sprayed on... how long does it take to dry? (by the way, what would THAT feel like for the guy? Drying latex on his penis... ok, I've had drying MOCHA and CHAI on my ARM, and that was nasty. I can't imagine what drying LATEX on something that sensitive would feel like) So either you're waiting for this spray on crap to dry... or in the heat of the moment, you just have at it. Then SHE has latex crap all over HER! And he has less on him - thus pretty much ensuring that all chance of the condom functioning as a barrier against STDs or pregnancy is pretty much gone.

Another thought - condoms are supposed to have a bit of space at the end. How would a spray on achieve this? You can't say that it's somehow not necessary, because um, yeah - thin latex is bound to break with enough force behind it, and if standard condoms can break for that reason, thin sprayed on latex is even more likely to be prone to breakage.

I tried checking out their website spraykondom.de to see if perhaps I could figure out what this was all about... but it's in German, and they don't seem to have a translated website. DAMN. I don't speak German, I speak French.

So. Thoughts? I'm leaving this post public and cross posting to my blog. I'm just... confused. I think this is a stupid idea. I'm ranting. Join my rant! Or tell me off. That works too. :D
