TM - Loyalty

Loyalty? Well, in my country, we have a saying about loyalty. It's very long and involved, and loses a great deal in translation, but it does involve two brothers, a very large palm tree and severe bodily injury. So, that is not really important. What's important is what I have learned about loyalty since coming to America.

I have learned that there is nothing more important to a man than the friends he keeps. Or, in my case, the friends who at first tolerated his presence, teasing and ridiculing him and taking advantage of his simple, naive nature, and eventually grew to sort of like him. No, no, "the gang" as I like to call them, (using the new gesture Eric taught me, called "air quotes"), may not be perfect. In fact, an argument could be made that they're a bunch of slackers and losers.

But they are my friends, and they are the most important thing in the world to me.

Yes, I occasionally have to endure a frustrating, if rousing game of Monkey-in-the-Middle. I am sure you can guess who the monkey might be. But chasing a ball while Hyde and Kelso keep it away from me can be a small price to pay.

Oh, and sure, there are times when they poke fun at my accent, or my amusing lack of knowledge about American culture.

So what if Eric's father has only gotten my name right once, when he was drunk, instead of calling me "Tonto" or "Tarzan"?

What does any of that matter when I have a place to hang out and talk with people who like me-- a number of whom look very good in tight jeans-- and have the opportunity to learn so much about my new home?

They accept me. Even Donna has given up on trying to hide her underwear in her room, and Jackie has stopped asking her men to slap me for staring at her from across the basement.

And most important of all, they have brought me to the best thing this country has to offer: The Circle.

So here I am, and here is where I am staying, with my friends, the girls upon whom I have long-standing crushes, and my favorite pastime.

God Bless America!
