Modern Fairytale

Bobby was in love with Lorna. Bobby was always in love with Lorna. It was just a constant state of Bobbyness. In the middle of a fight against skrulls? Lorna. Having sex with a shape-shifting, untrustworthy blue lady? Lorna. (No comment on the shape shifting during sex, of course.) Fighting with his son-from-the-future-with-Emma? Lorna.

He had no idea what it was. Maybe the fact that they were constantly unresolved. Maybe it was that she knew him better than almost anyone and he liked to think the same (though it was hard to know Lorna sometimes). Maybe it was all that history, or the way it really really sucked that she always picked losers and Bobby wasn't a loser. Not that Alex was a loser in the traditional sense of the term, just in the Bobby sense. He was a loser because he wasn't Bobby and didn't treat Lorna the way she ought to be treated, which he knew because she always came to him when her heart was broken. By Alex or one of the other losers.

Whatever it was. Bobby was in love with Lorna, and had resigned himself to the fact that he always would be.

One night, the night after they first met, the night after Bobby could tell things were over with Henry and would be starting with Sam (because Bobby knows Lorna better than almost anyone, sometimes even Lorna), Bobby explained it to Carrie. He didn't keep secrets from Carrie, because secrets ended his last three relationships, sometimes before they even started, and pretty much the last thing he wanted to do was end his relationship with Carrie.

She listened to him quietly and then nodded and kissed him on the temple. "Okay."

And that was it. He'd already asked her home for Thanksgiving, already told her he loved her about a million times (a day, and they were all true), but he didn't really expect her to just be okay with it.

"Uh. What?"

"There are people you're meant to be with and people you aren't. And you can love all of them romantically, but that doesn't mean you're meant to be more than just friends." She smiled at him. "Maybe friends-plus."

It sounded like she was speaking from experience. "Oh. So... you're okay with it?"

"Bobby, do you still want me to go to your parents' for Thanksgiving?"

"Yeah."

"And between ten minutes ago and right now, have your feelings for me changed?"

Bobby nodded. "Yep."

Carrie's face fell. "Oh."

"No no, I mean," he reached over and pulled her towards him. "I think I love you about five billion times more than before."

She laughed. "That's a lot."

"Hey, I'm a numbers guy. Don't doubt the numbers." He smiled and kissed her. "I don't think people like you are supposed to exist. Perfect people."

"I'm not perfect."

"Perfect for me."

"If you say so, Bobby Drake."

Bobby grinned. "I absolutely do."

Carrie grinned back, then then pushed Bobby back onto the bed. When she kissed him, she was the only person on his mind. Bobby was in love with Lorna, and he always would be. But that was okay. For the first time in his life, he was in love with someone else even more.
