Seconding the Buffy icon love - the S7 (Never Leave Me?) one you're using is achingly, meltingly lovely and if you weren't using it yourself already I'd snag it. (I have a hang up about that. I'm just weird that way.) I have a huge thing for icons that look like illustrations or paintings rather than photographs and aren't too "smooth"; all of yours are wonderful but this one in particular has an very subtle painterly feel to it.
You are AMAZING at picking out episodes from what's an otherwise kind of ordinary crop of a pretty shot of the character. I am super impressed (and just a little intimidated)! I know what you mean about looking more painting like. I love both: the super-clear-could-be-looking-right-at-me and the more artistic and interesting painterly effects. I have tried innumerable times over the years (and years) to get that effect on demand but, alas, it eludes me. Whenever I achieve it, it's purely a happy accident. I suspect it's something about the cap -- the original show lighting plus the capper's settings -- and how it responds to my preferred processing m.o. I almost flipped the icon to b/w because Buffy had gone so hot and saturated. I had to look at it for a long time to decide that I didn't care what others thought; I really liked the effect. :)
I think of the need for clear images as the curse of those who are nearsighted and for whom the world is naturally out of focus. :) I have a driving need for clarity and I'm pleased the style has its fans. ♥
I don't mind icons that have a textural style that can leave some of it out of focus but sometimes it gets out of hand. So unless the image is over the top fantastic, I choose crisp and clear (but even those aren't always good). Yours are clear and bright and not overly exposed (sometimes the colors are odd out there in icon world). So it is much appreciated.
I should be clear: I love icons of many styles and I am envious of those makers who can work in the whole, where the entire image is the art and losing some detail to a larger, visually interesting composition is a good trade-off. I wish I had that kind of eye but I am inexorably drawn to detail. The clearer, the crisper the better. I personally feel that I would grow as an icon maker if I could loosen my grip on the need for detail. I think that's often a weakness for me because it's...predictable and often repetitive. I wish I were looser and freer but I'm almost OCD about seeing the details.
I'm lucky because many people also like crisp and clear icons. Perhaps not to the exclusion of other styles but there's always an audience for a reasonably competently cropped/colored clear icon of a pretty face. :)

I'm glad it works for you, too!
