It was Monday, and even when visiting - and having taken the day off - Aaron kept himself busy while Dale was in classes. It was only fair, since he was going to only be back late tomorrow, and Law School was no joke.
But then, neither was this. Them.
By the time Dale came back to his place, Aaron was ready. Washed and scented. Dressed to the nines. Curls brushed up to a shine. And his eyes gleamed when his boyfriend closed the door and turned and saw him, then took his time of just looking his over, the day’s ennui fading from the handsome face as they were replaced by a satisfied little smile. As far as Aaron was concerned, it was a perfect kind of a smile, curving the soft lips up just so, making the pale blue eyes deepen. And yes, he was looking up in those eyes as Dale stepped closer and took him in for a long breathless kiss.
It was watching him transform from okay, slightly tired Dale into brightly smiling, bright-eyed, energized, glowy happy in-love Dale. Adoring Dale. Combined with the kiss... kisses, the awareness that he had caused it almost turned Aaron’s knees to water, but they were holding each other tight enough that it didn’t matter.
And then it got even more warm, heart-stopping, when Dale murmured with that soft, almost twanging voice of his, “I love you.”
“I love you, too.” Aaron’s own eyes felt like they were glowing as well, and he was walking straight, happiness... yes, happiness brightening up the early evening yet more. And he did walk a few steps away. “Now get ready.”
“You have something planned?”
“Mm-hmm. Dinner’s out tonight. All proper.”
Dale waggled his eyebrows. “You’ll need to brush your hair again.”
“I think I’ll manage that.” Oh, the smirking. Because it had only gotten mussed up in the kiss...
It was just like that as Dale showered and dressed up, and then Aaron took the wheel to take them to the place he had in mind. Not that he’d booked a table for two weeks earlier or anything - considering there was a university and it was February 14... yeah.
The look on the greeter’s face as he gave her the name for the reservation was priceless. She mouthed a half-apology, then her eyes flicked to the elaborately couply table in a rather obvious part of the restaurant. Dale followed her look, then his eyes crinkled at Aaron, whose lips quivered only for a moment before his chin flew up. “That would do just fine, thank you.”
The dinner was quiet - he had chosen well, that way - but the levels of amusement kept on rising throughout it. The staff, obviously, had been prepared for a couple, too. Menu suggestions, treatment, the entire thing. And they kept on scrambling to accommodate the fact that it was two guys, guy-y guys, too, instead. While Aaron and Dale, holding hands under the table and grinning at each other, tried to discretely re-encourage them to carry on as planned, or mostly so.
Two of the waiters caught on to the fact that they were a couple after the first, oh, twenty minutes or so. How the third one could remain oblivious to the fact was a mystery, but a very, very funny one. And harmless.
It felt so settling, to have this. A candle-lit dinner with good food and quiet conversation. And then going home to Dale’s place, to kiss and make love, and this time it was Dale’s head on his chest as they collapsed back, and he stroked through the sweat-dampened strands as they caught their breath, as his heart slowed its THUMP-THUMP-THUMP around everything, and the explosion of pleasure slowly faded to a calm, satisfied glow.
Then they talked each other to sleep, tangled up and caressing skin and hair as was comfortable, spooned and relaxed for the rest of the night.
The most perfect Valentine’s day that Aaron had ever known.
And... one of the best parts was that he thought that it would be the first of many.
He not only could live without. He was looking forward.
It was good to be alive, here, and with Dale.
