Heading into Isis Chloe sighed. She hated this day. It was awful, filled with declarations of love and commitment when it was probable that they weren’t ready to do that every day. Why did one day have to matter so much? Why did someone have to express how they felt on one day? Why couldn’t they do it every day? Was it not rationally possible?
Placing her bag down she sighed. Maybe she was just bitter. It’s not like Jimmy had ever wanted to celebrate. He had always said that it was a hallmark holiday and the only people who benefit from it where the ones who made the cards or candy or chocolate or flowers. But, just once, she had wished he’d felt the need to declare their love on this day. Now they were divorced though and it wasn’t helping that this day had to happen only a month after the divorce.
What was worse than that was that she would most likely spend this day alone. Clark would be wrapped up in the paper and saving people. When he got a moment to breath it was usually used to pine for Lois, who he’d decided to let go of. The team, the team she was now a member of, where scattered all over the world. There was little to no chance of any of them coming to spend the day with her and if she did hear from them it would be to check in and that wasn’t overly romantic. Lois had her own plans. There was a cute barista at the Talon who had decided to ask her out. She had been prepping all day for it, which was the reason Chloe had come to work.
And Oliver. There was Oliver. The man who was constantly confusing her these days. He’d spend a week coming in every day with coffee or lunch. Sometimes he even dragged her to dinner then he was incognito for two weeks. It’d been insane to her. She couldn’t understand the man at all, let alone figure out why her cousin had stuck around for six months if this is how he was. Since Valentines Day fell in the middle of the second week of his mystery vacation that it was unlikely that he’d drop by. If he did she would be completely surprised but since that was unlikely to happen she decided not to dwell on it
Moving about her routine she was being to find the whole thing tiring. She spent a couple of hours researching bad guys for the team, a couple of hours looking into the information that Clark faxed over, cause apparently she didn’t even warrant a visit anymore. A few hours after that with the meteor infected, insuring that they were well and looked after. When that was all done she looked at the clock and decided that insisted of working any further she’d head home, curl up with ice cream and a romantic movie, and wait until one of the team checks in and needed her help. Even if it meant that Lois could come home at any moment and that would ruin the Valentines Day hate bubble but she figured it was worth the risk, seeing as she didn’t want to be at Isis anymore.
Gathering her things she was about to pick them up when she heard the front door opening. Assuming it was just another one of her clients she headed out into the main area. Placing on a smile and hoping that she could get rid of them quickly she pulled open the door and stopped. She really had thought that he wouldn’t show up. It was a statistical improbability. But here he was, with a bouquet of red roses.
“I was going to bring tulips but they’re not really a Valentine Day flower.”
“Ah,” Chloe replied, with a nervous nod and reaching forward to take the flowers. “They’re beautiful Oliver but I wasn’t expecting to see you today.”
“I know, I wasn’t expecting to be here. But Lois called earlier and said you’d be all alone. So I figured I’d come keep you company.”
“Oh, well I wasn’t expecting you. Your only around one week in every three.” Chloe replied with a shrug, as she turned to find a vase.
“Well I don’t want to take over your life,” Oliver said with a shrug.
“Cause my life is so filled at the moment Oliver.”
“I’m sorry. Let me take you to dinner, you can tell me all about it.” Oliver said with a smile.
“Even if it could be turned out to be a tad like an operetta?,” Chloe asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Even then, ok. And I promise to make no comments about you driving a knife into your chest.”
“Well that could be fun,” Chloe said, grabbing her bag and keys, and locking the door once they were out.
“It could be but then I’d have to rush you to the hospital and that wouldn’t be a highlight for me.”
“Fine, I guess I could live without. But only this once.”

Following Oliver back up the stairs to the Isis door she smiled. Dinner had been great. They had talked and laughed. She had reassured him that she would enjoy his company at anytime and he had promised to come around more frequently. They had made fun of the love sick couples around them and in the section across from them, where they were packed in tightly on long tables that barely allowed for any arm room and had couples far too close together.
All in all it had been a great dinner. It had made her Valentines Day hate bubble whither, enough so that when he asked the waiter to bring out to pieces of rich chocolate cake he had shattered the bubble into small pieces.
Smiling at him as he took her hand she said, “I had a good time tonight. Thank you.”
“That’s ok,” Oliver replied with a nod, “But I have to tell you something.”
“Ok”
“Well I’ve been staying away for a reason. I’ve been feeling things lately.” Oliver said taking a deep breath, “Things I don’t think I should feel. Towards you.”
“Oh,” Chloe sighed.
“I like you Chloe, a lot. And I don’t know when that came about but it has and I just thought you should know.”
Chloe nodded, opening her mouth to reply. Before she got the chance Oliver placed his lips gently on hers. Caressing them softly Chloe smiled, her hands moving to wrap her hands around his neck as his lips moved against hers. Feeling him pull her against his body he took a deep breath through her nose and pulled away.
“Oliver,” she whispered, unsure of how to say what she wanted to say.
“I know Chloe. I know. You’re not ready and I’m ok with that, I just wanted you to know how I feel.”
Watching as he left she leaned back against the door, blowing out a breath. She hadn’t in a million years expected that to happen but it had. The weirdest thing of all was the hope that it seemed to leave her with.
Hope that something new was coming and it would be amazing, when she was ready.
The End
