Sighing as she walked up the stairs she couldn’t believe what she had done today. Maybe it was the fact that it was her birthday or maybe she was lonely, Veronica wasn’t really sure. She was a little surprised by how glad she was that it had happened. Sure she hadn’t planned on kissing Duncan, but she had and somehow she was glad. It was nice to have some form of normal back. Sure she wasn’t really sure about wanting this, a relationship, but it was nice to be the sole focus of someone for once.
Placing her keys into the door her foot bumped onto a package that she hadn’t noticed while being lost in thought. Bending down she picked up the box she had just kicked before opening the door and placing her bag on the seat. Placing the box on the counter she pulled off the note that was stuck to the top before opening it, curious as to who was leaving boxes at her doorstep.
The lady in the store said this was
the only cake for girls who love cake
Happy Birthday
-L
Sighing, Veronica opened the box to be met with the most beautiful cake she’d ever seen. It was iced in chocolate with little lilies adoring the corners and the words ‘happy birthday my love’ written across the top in, what was once, melted white chocolate. Closing the lid quickly she couldn’t help, but feel the most inexplicable guilt ever. She couldn’t understand it. After all she didn’t owe Logan anything after everything they had been through and, despite his beliefs she had tried to help him, he just wasn’t ready to accept that. Now she thought she owed it to herself to try to be normal again.
Finding her phone she dialed a number she hadn’t dialed in a while. When the person at the other end picked up Veronica didn’t give them time to speak before saying, “Hey Duncan. If you still want to go to dinner with me than I’d love to go... Great. When are you free?”

Lying on the beach Veronica couldn’t help but feel amazing. The sun was shining and causing just the right amount of heat, perfect for tanning, and her man was out in the ocean, half naked. Her birthday would only get better if her father had actually been able to be in town, instead of out and finding a bail jumper. She understood though. They needed the money, especially if he was going to help put her through college, so if he needed to be away for a while she could understand that, even if it worried her while he was gone.
Closing her eyes she took a deep breath, enjoying the smell of the sea air, as a shadow descended on her body. Moaning she said, “Move, Logan.”
“Is this all you’re going to do on your birthday?”
“Isn’t this enough. I’ve got you, the beach and there is cake waiting for us at home. Death by Chocolate cake,” Veronica replied with a shrug, “What more could I want?”
“Oh I don’t know,” Logan responded with a smile. “I think it might be more of what I could do for you.”
Shaking her head, figuring he was making a dirty joke, Veronica just tuned him out until she felt his arms circle around her, lifting her off the ground. Shrieking, Veronica opened her eyes and grabbed onto Logan as hard as possible, praying he wasn’t going to do what she thought he was going to do. Laughing as he threw her from his arms she slammed her mouth shut just before impacting with the water.
Swimming to the surface Veronica sent Logan her best death stare before saying, “You going to pay for that Mister.”
“I’d like to see you try,” Logan called as he took off down the beach.
Running out of the water Veronica gave chase but she couldn’t help but feel that this was the best birthday she had had in a long time.

Knocking quietly on the door Veronica placed the cake on the ground and prepared to walk away when it opened. She hadn’t thought that either boy would answer that quickly, to busy in their drunken spurs to answer the door that fast. Sighing she prayed it wasn’t the one she was technically not talking too, she turned and waited for the male to speak.
“Well Ronnie, what are you doing here? You know Logan’s out, probably giving his balls to another blond but he’s still out.” Dick replied with an arrogant grin in place.
“Hey Toad!” Veronica said with a fake smile and peppy edge to her voice, “What did you stop snorting to answer the door?”
“Firstly none of the drugs I take require me to snort and what’s with the box on the ground?”
“It’s for the birthday boy,” Veronica replied, “I figured someone other than you should remember today. Can you just give it to Logan for me, please?”
“I can do that Ronnie,” Dick said with a nod, “But what are you going to for me?”
“I was thinking that I wouldn’t have your limbs attached to four wagons and ripped from your body.”
“Man! You’re such a bitch! No wonder why Logan isn’t with you anymore,” Dick said as he scooped up the cake and slamming the door behind him.
“It was nice talking to you too,” Veronica sighed.
A couple of hours later, while she was out on surveillance for another trophy wife, Veronica smiled at the text she was sent.
Thanks for the cake, it made my day.

Standing on the beach Veronica couldn’t believe it. It was over. She was never going to be a student again. Her real, adult life began now, well hopefully not right now cause surrounded by a bunch of college students partying away their last summer wasn’t really the way she wanted to start adulthood. Then again people like Dick would still be doing keg stands well into their thirties.
Smiling as a pair of arms wrapped around her waist she could believe how lucky she was. As far as she was concerned she’d snagged the best guy in the world. He was kind and sweet, a little funny, witty and sarcastic, he called her on her bullshit, and she called him on his. It was the perfect match and she couldn’t believe she hadn’t seen it all those years ago. They had to go through her pretension bullshit before they were finally able to be happy but she was glad that they finally were.
Turning she kissed him quickly before saying, “And to what do I owe the pleasure of your company?”
“Dick’s trying to make me do a keg stand and I gave those up when I became a college graduate.” Logan replied before stealing a kiss, “Besides it’s your birthday and I have something for you in the car.”
Allowing him to pull her along Veronica sighed, “You know I never thought I’d say this but sex in an X-terra is getting kind of boring.”
“Funny,” Logan replied dryly, pulling her in front of him, “Well, we can do that while we’re here, it’s not the reason we’re here.” He continued pulling the back door opened.
Gasping when she saw the cake Veronica smiled. The icing on top was made to look like an FBI badge and gun. Turning in his arms she said, “This isn’t a little predictable to you?”
“Nope, my girlfriends a gorgeous FBI cadet and I couldn’t be more proud,” Logan replied kissing her again, “Now, birthday girl, how about some cake?”
“Like I ever say no to cake.”

Placing the final touches on the small cake she had made Veronica smiled and picked it up. Tip toeing back to the bedroom she paused in the doorway to admire her husband. He was perfect to her. After years not being able to get their relationship right they had finally been able to settle down and commit. Or more she had been able to settle down and commit, without feeling trapped or finding a reason to leave and that made her happy. They were finally getting it right, having been married for a year and a half now, and she couldn’t be happier. All urges to lie or sneak had disappeared and now she just wanted to be with him completely.
Today was no different, except that it was his birthday and she had some amazing news to share with him. News that would have once had her running the other way but now just made her so happy she couldn’t describe it.
Placing the cake down on the table she leaned over and kissed Logan lightly, waiting for a reaction. Smiling further as he groaned lightly she kissed him again and watched his eyes fluttered open.
“Hey sleepy head,” she whispered.
“Hey,” he replied, “Why are you up?”
“Cause it’s your birthday. I come bearing cake,” Veronica replied, placing the cake in front of him, “Happy birthday.”
Groaning Logan rolled onto his back, “Why do you constantly need to celebrate birthdays?”
“Cake,” Veronica replied with a grin, “Plus presents and I happen to have a great present for you this year.”
“Oh really? Is it something I can strip off you?” Logan asked sitting up and glancing down her body.
“No, it’s something we’ve been talking about for a while now.” Veronica answered, picking up her hand and placing it on her stomach, waiting for him to take the hint.
“Ok -ay,” Logan replied, confused, glancing between her stomach and her face, “Oh. You’re pregnant?”
“Yeah, six weeks,” Veronica whispered.
Kissing her hard he pulled back with a goofy grin on his face, “Seriously, we’re pregnant. If we weren’t lying down you would be swinging in my arms.”
Giggling Veronica replied, “I’m not sure that’s too good for the morning sickness.”
“Well how about we just have cake,” Logan said grabbing a handful of cake and rubbing it over her belly, “The only way it’s good to eat.”

Placing the last candle in place Veronica smiled at the cake. She couldn’t believe this day had arrived but now it was here a house of screaming five year olds wasn’t as scary as what she thought it would be. That didn’t mean though that she wasn’t looking forward to handing them all back to their parents once Allyson’s birthday party was over.
Looking at the horse cake again she felt very proud of the fact that she had accomplished the master piece in such a short period of time. Allyson had only come to her last night, telling her she had finally figured out what she wanted the cake to be and Veronica had spent the morning slaving away while Logan had set up, all the while praying that Allyson didn’t change her mind and that the cake would still be wanted by the girl.
Grabbing her as she ran through the kitchen Veronica lifter her up so she was sitting on her hip, and carried her over to where her cake sat. Watching as the girl gasped in glee she couldn’t help but feel proud. The girl was such a perfect mix of her and Logan. She blond curly hair that stopped at her shoulders, and chocolaty brown eyes, that were definitely her favorite part of the girl. Putting Allyson down, she watched as Allyson took off after her friends yelling about the amazing cake in the kitchen.
Smiling Veronica turned to the pile of dishes, hoping to get a head start before the rest of them were brought in. Loading the dishwasher quickly she turned it on, knowing she would have to wait a while before it was ready to go. Turning to prepare for the cake cutting her smile grew when two hands wrapped around her waist.
“You know I was hoping to lick the excess icing off your body later on tonight.”
“Well,” Veronica said, spinning in his arms, “It’s lucky for you I saved some in the fridge.”
Kissing her softly Logan whispered, “Have I mentioned that you are the best wife ever.”
“Once or twice.”
“Good, cause you definitely need to know. Now, get your camera cause our kid is getting restless for her cake, just like her mother.”
Laughing, Veronica stepped out of his arms and handed Logan the cake, “Please I can blame so much more on you than you do on me so I think I can live taking the wrap for her cake love. However, Mac has the camera so all we need are matches.”
Motioning with his head Logan replied, “Top draw over there, I’ll take this out while you get them.”
“I’ll see you out there.” Veronica said with a smile, knowing without a doubt this would be the best cake she ever had, simply because her daughter loved it.
