Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chpater 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 7 Chapter 8 Chapter 9 Chapter 10 Chapter 11 Chapter 12 Chapter 13 Chapter 14 Chapter 15 Chapter 16 Chloe sat on the fence to the horse breaking area of the Kent farm, phone in hand, as she tried not to start crying again. She had done the right thing last night, not for herself but for the rest of the world. As far as she was a concerned it was nice to put herself first for a while but now she needed to get back to reality and that meant she came in second again. It may break her heart but it’s what she wanted, to ensure the rest of the world was safe. It hurt but eventually that hurt would disappear to an aching throb that she’d only acknowledge at the holidays.
“Chloe.”
Turning quickly she gave a sad smile when she saw that Clark had snuck up on her. “Hey Clark, are the boys ready?”
Lifting a hand to her check he brushed away a stray tear before saying, “Yeah they’re in the barn. But if you’re not up for seeing them I’m sure they’ll understand.”
Chloe shook her head, “They’re leaving for so long. I have to say goodbye, it would be weird not too.”
“Ok,” Clark replied, “If there’s anything I can do -”
“It’s fine Clark. I did bring this on myself.”
“Still if he had wanted you to stay he could have -”
“What Clark?” Chloe asked with a raised eyebrow, “Forced me to stay. That’s not how the world works and that’s not the type of person that Oliver is.”
Clark nodded, “Ok. But just so we’re clear Oliver’s a great guy and he’ll never find anyone better than you.”
Chloe sniffed, “I’ll probably never do better than him,” she said wiping away a stray tear.
“Then I leave you with these parting words, if that’s true love than why did you break up with him?” Clark asked before kissing her gently on the forehead and turning to head into the barn.
********
Thirty minutes late Chloe wiped her face one last time she gathered her nerve before heading into the barn. She knew that AC, Victor and Bart would be in there and she hadn’t told anyone other than Clark of her break up with Ollie. It still hurt too much to think about let alone tell people about. It hurt so badly but she knew it was the right thing for both of them. It was time they stopped fooling themselves, the rest of the world would always come first and that left no place for a relationship, let alone one that would become long distance.
Taking a deep breath she walked into the barn, trying to keep her composure, “So the Daily Planet is running with the story that a gas explosion destroyed the ‘vacant’ LutherCorp building down by the docks.”
“Vacant?” Clark asked with a raised eyebrow, “Looks like the Luthor cover-up machine is in full swing.”
“All that matters is that we got Bart out before Lex ran him into an early grave.” Chloe replied with a shrug.
“Come on,” Bart said with a grin, wrapping an arm around Chloe’s shoulders, “Come on. No worries. I had plenty of juice left.”
“Could have fooled me, the way you cleaned out Mama Kent’s fridge,” Victor replied.
“That’s cause I need to stay fuelled up. Just in case I need to, uh, spring into action,” Bart said with a smile, leaving for a second before returning with a bunch of tulips and handing them to Chloe.
“She still has a boyfriend,” Oliver said with a glare as he entered the barn. Bart flew to the other side of the barn as Oliver went and wrapped both his arms around her from behind.
Chloe took in a deep breath, unsure what to make of this. She was sure that Oliver had gotten the message last night but now he was acting like it hadn’t happened at all. She knew Oliver was use to getting what he wanted but he had to know that she had meant what she said, didn’t he?
“Yeah. Well, a man can dream, can’t he?” Bart asked with a shrug.
“Now you know why we call him Impulse,” AC said nudging Clark slightly.
“Impulse, Cyborg, Aquaman, Green Arrow and Watchtower, what do you guys call your team?” Clark inquired.
“I don’t know. I’ve been thinking that we need something cool. We need something like, uh - like, uh...” Bart said, trailing off, unsure of a cool name for them.
“The Justice League,” Chloe whispered, “The Justice League of America or the JLA.”
Oliver looked down at her with a smile, “It’s perfect. It’s got the word justice in it and everything.”
“Yeah and Lex is going to get a big dose of justice,” Victor agreed as the other two nodding their agreement.
“What did you guys find?” Chloe asked, hoping it wasn’t as bad as she had imagined last night.
“LuthorCorp is starting up divisions of 33.1 all across that globe. Wherever there’s evidence of people with abilities there’ll be laboratories to do experiments on them.” Victor replied, hanging his head solemnly.
“We can’t have that happen,” Chloe whispered, closing her eyes.
“We won’t,” Oliver said, squeezing Chloe gently, “Our first target is a large facility on the island of Corto Maltese. You guys know the drill. Get you gear, wheels up in half an hour. I’ll meet you on the tarmac.”
“You coming, amigo?” Bart asked Clark.
“Yeah, you got to come with us man,” AC said.
“We could use the big guns,” Victor agreed.
Oliver nodded, “They’re right, you know - you’d be a major asset to the team.”
“I want to be a part of this, I really do but I have a problem that I have to take care of first,” Clark replied.
The team nodded and Oliver said, “Ok we can live with that. Now if you’ll excuse us Chloe and I are going to take a walk before the flight.”
Taking the hand he held out to her she followed him cautiously not too sure she was going to like where this conversation went.
*************
Standing in the back paddock Oliver was amazed that Chloe hadn’t blown up at him yet. She looked like she was ready to pop, there was a vein on her head that looked like it was about to blow at any moment and he couldn’t help but feel proud of that as he’d never done that before. Then again he’d never made her mad before, at least not as mad as she obviously was at the moment.
Smiling innocently as Chloe turned to face him he was surprised when she calmly said, “Did you miss the break up last night or did you just want to save face when it came to the guys?”
“Neither actually.” Oliver replied, “I don’t want to be broken up so I’ve decided that we’re not.”
“Ollie,” Chloe sighed, “Your about to leave to save the world. That’s more important than us.”
Oliver laughed, “Not to me. Nothing is more important to me than you and I’m leaving so I can make the world a safer place for you to exist in.”
Chloe stomped her foot, “You can’t say things like that. It’s not fair.”
“Well it’s not fair that your breaking both our hearts but you’re doing it anyway.” Oliver argued, “Listen to me Chloe, please. We can make this work. I’m a billionaire, I have a private jet. That means you can fly out to see me whenever you want and I can do the same. We can call, text, skpye each other until we’re so sick of it it isn’t funny.”
“Ollie -”
“No, I love you. More than I have ever loved anyone and I’m sorry if I’ve never told you this before or if I haven’t told you enough but it’s how I feel. I just wish you would see it for a moment.”
“I see it. I see it, Ollie.” Chloe whispered, taking one of his hands in hers.
“Good, now believe it.” Oliver replied before pulling her to him and placing a kiss on her lips. Wrapping his arms around her waist he was glad when she snaked her arms around his neck. Taking that as a good sign he pulled her closer only to have her pull away.
“No Oliver -”
“Yes Chloe. We can make this work. We can. I know it and I believe enough for the both of us.” Oliver whispered, “Just don’t give up not until we’ve fought with every breath to preserve what we have.”
“Oh Ollie,” Chloe whispered, “Are you sure?”
“Yes, even if you’re not. We can do this. We can make long distance work. I’ll prove it to you. All you have to do is say yes.”
Chloe nodded, “Ok. Yes. But if it gets in the way of saving the world you’re getting a big fat I told you so.”
“I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Oliver said with a smile before sweeping her up in another kiss.
