Chapter 2: The Whisperer and The Prince
"Your friend is a male?!" The King exclaimed once they were in Ryo's estate and Yamashita had finally told him about Kazuya's gender.
It was one thing to let a Whisperer - believed to be evil creatures who roamed the lands and manipulate people in the old times - kiss the Prince. But to know that Whisperer is actually a male? Ridiculous!
What would the people think? And would Jin let a man kiss him like he was some damsel in distress? The King thought.
But then again, if that would save his son's life, he was willing to face the citizens' question and his son's possible disgust.
"I've been trying to tell you that, your Highness," Yamashita said apologetically.
The King rubbed his temple. "Very well. Since we can not do anything to change his gender and the Prince needs to be cured, the plan proceeds as it is."
Yamashita breathed a sigh of relief. This was the only way to save his friend and if the King decided not to free him then he didn't know who else to ask for help.
I'm going to save you Kazuya. No matter what, I'll save you.
Worry began to flood him again as he saw Kazuya in the spacious room that Lord Ryo instructed his servants to lead them to. It was obvious that the man didn't want to release Kazuya but he had no choice in the matter since the King was the one who demanded it.
In the middle of the room was a huge metal cage and inside, like a wild animal, was Kazuya.
"Kazu!" Yamashita exclaimed.
"Yamapi?" Kazuya turned towards his friend but he didn't move from his slumped position on the cold floor of the cage. He was too weak to do that.
"What did they do to you?! Are you alright? Stupid question. Of course you're not alright-"
Kazuya smiled at his friend's babbling. He moved closer to the metal bars and reached out his hand to Yamapi to reassure him. "I'm fine Pi." He really was. Lord Ryo and his men were afraid to touch him so they just fed him with drugs to subdue him. He frowned. "But why are you here? I thought I told you to run away. Did they catch you too?"
"Oh no. I got help. You'll be safe now Kazu."
"Help?" Kazuya asked, confused.
The King looked at Kazuya curiously. He had never seen a Whisperer before but the legend says that they are very beautiful. The legend wasn't lying. Kazuya might be a man but he could easily outshine any of the women in the Kingdom.
He couldn't hear what Kazuya was saying to Yamashita because it was too soft but he figured the two could understand each other, which meant that Kazuya knew and spoke their language.
Interesting. He didn't know much of Whisperers except the things from the legends and even then, most of those things were based on rumors.
Murderer! A voice shrieked in his head followed by images of Whisperers being killed as he looked on. Those certainly weren't his thought! He looked at Kazuya. "Did you just speak in my head?"
"Kazuya! What did you tell him?!" Yamashita whined. "I'm sorry, your Majesty. He's still upset."
You do not deserve to hear my voice. Kazuya glared at him but instead of getting angry, the King was glad.
Kazuya was already showing signs of his powers even if he was weakened at that point. How much more powerful would he be otherwise. That of course meant that Yamashita wasn't lying and this Whisperer can cure his son.
"Whisperer, I know you have deep hatred for me and my ancestors. And you have good reasons to do so. But my son's life, Prince Jin, is in danger and your friend told me that you can cure him. I promised your friend I will exempt you from the law and allow you to live peacefully among my people if you do cure the Prince."
Why should I trust you?
"Because your friend does," he answered the mental question.
Kazuya glanced at Yamashita and they conversed in hush tones. After a while, Kazuya glanced back at the King.
I am tired of living so you can't threaten me with death. Yamapi is the only reason I'm still alive so if you ever harm him, I am prepared to protect him with all I have and I can assure you, if you even survive, you will at least lose all that you value. I am saying this so that you know that you can't order me to do anything. But unlike you royalties, I am not cruel. I will at least give your son a chance. If he proves to be worth saving then I will save him. I give you my word.
The King could feel that Kazuya was sincere. So he nodded and signaled for one of his guards. "Tell Ryo I will bring the Whisperer with me."
Lord Ryo again had no choice but to give up the Whisperer. The King's words are absolute after all.
They were silent on the way to the palace, each to their own thoughts.
Yamashita was ecstastic that finally, Kazuya could stop hiding and running away from those who wanted to kill him. He owed his family's life to Kazuya after all. Kazuya had saved them from criminals in the forest where they happened to pass. Yamashita was only 10 years old then and far too young to defend his sick mother and the few merchandise they were on the way to selling in the market.
Wild animals came running towards them, scaring the robbers away.
Scared, they huddled close together. Did they survive almost being robbed only to be brutally eaten by wild animals?
But to their surprise, the animals only sniffed them.
"Friends don't scare them," came a melodic voice. From behind the trees, a beautiful boy stepped out. "Don't worry, they won't hurt you."
As if on cue, the animals left them.
"W-who are you?" He asked.
Kazuya smiled at him. "It is better for you not to know, little boy."
He turned to leave but before he can truly vanish from their side, Yamashita's mother quietly said, "You're a Whisperer, aren't you?"
The boy stiffened but did not say anything.
His mother looked like she was thinking for a few moments before her expression cleared. "It's alright Kazuya. Why don't you stay with us?"
Yamashita was puzzled. Did he miss anything? Why did his mother know the boy's name?
Later, his mother told him that Kazuya can talk and project images in a person's mind and that is how she knew Kazuya's name and story. Kazuya himself had projected it to her.
Since then, Kazuya stayed with them and had been there for him when his mother died in a plague when he was 16. That was also the time that he learned about the kiss of life.
Kazuya had offered to give it to his mother but his mother had vehemently refused.
"I am old and due to die anytime anyway. It'll happen a bit earlier, is all. Don't do it Kazuya! I will hate you forever if you save me now, do you understand me? Give it to someone who deserves it more than I do. You know what I mean, right?"
His mother and Kazuya was silent for a while, probably having a mental conversation.
His mother smiled. "Good. Take care of each other, okay?"
"I will take care of Yamapi, mother. I-I love you and t-thank you," Kazuya whispered.
He looked at Kazuya and they hugged each other while looking at his mother who closed her eyes and was soon dead.
Kazuya cried. "I'm so sorry Pi, I'm so sorry!"
Until now, he didn't know what Kazuya and his mother had been conversing that day but he had never resented Kazuya for not saving his mother. Kazuya was heartbroken and devastated. Even a fool could see that he had loved and was ready to save Yamapi's mother.
The King, on the other hand was immersed in thoughts of his own.
He was quietly observing the Whisperer. Legends say that they were a scheming and shrewd race. But the King could not see malice in this Whisperer.
He watched as the Whisperer almost jumped out of his seat when the carriage bounced slightly on the uneven road.
He let his lips lift slightly in an amused smile. The Whisperer looked like an innocent child, actually. No wonder his friend was protective of him.
The King didn't want to trust someone so easily but there was something about this Whisperer that made him just want to believe in the goodness in the race humans have hunted and loathed all their lives.
"We are here, your Majesty," someone, perhaps the coachman, said politely outside the carriage, breaking his musing.
"Gentlemen," the King motioned for Kazuya and Yamapi to enter the Palace after him.
Kazuya nodded and followed the King towards the Prince's room.
Yamashita was asked to stay in the waiting room.
Once they were in the room, Kazuya saw a young man lying on the huge bed in the middle of the room.
This must be Prince Jin, Kazuya thought.
The Prince was pale and he seemed to be in pain if the beads of sweat in his forehead and the grimace on his face was anything to go by. Strangely so, Kazuya still found him attractive, regal. Although the regal part must have come naturally with being born a royalty.
Royalty. With that word, Kazuya was reminded that he hated this family the most in the world. They and their ancestors were the reason Kazuya was separated from his family, the reason a lot of his relatives and friends are no longer alive, the reason he felt so alone most of the time.
Prince Jin must have noticed their presence in his room because he turned his dark eyes to their direction. "Father?"
"I brought someone that can cure you, son." The King said cheerfully.
Kazuya walked towards the Prince's bedside.
The Prince's eyes widened once he saw Kazuya's face.
He got up with some difficulty, and embraced Kazuya tightly. "You're finally here!"
The King's jaw dropped.
