Summary: The King's only son, Prince Jin, is gravely ill and it is said that only a kiss of life from a Whisperer - immortals who are able to wield magic - can cure the Prince. But Whisperers happen to be wiped out in the old times due to the decree passed by the previous royalties. Or so they thought until a Whisperer was caught. But there's a catch - this Whisperer happens to be a male.
A/N: I'm so sorry the update was a bit late. I had a Japanese exam and Organic Chemistry Finals during the week-end and I had to fight the temptation of going online unless I wanted to fail those two tests. But of course, I can't stay away from any form of AKAME for too long. ^^
Chapter 4: Tradition and Destiny
What is wrong with that Prince?! Kazuya fumed while walking at the hallway leading away from the Prince's chamber.
The Prince might had been dreaming about him but it doesn't mean he could just declare his love for him as if he had known him all his life! He had never even met the Prince before all this! Sure, the Prince was handsome, had the most captivating eyes, full kissable lips and-
No! He's a stranger and I do not appreciate being confessed on by a stranger!
"Bad mood this early in the morning, Kazu?"
Kazuya looked up to see Yamapi's questioning gaze. Yamapi was taller than him now. Whisperers aged differently from humans after all.
When they first met, Kazuya was already 30 human years old but as far as Whisperers were concerned, he was still considered to be a young boy. Physically, he looked like a teenager.
At first he didn't want to intrude on the humans' fight. He was simply watching from one of the branches of a tall tree. He didn't even like humans and so it was not his place to interfere. He was even amused by the scene unfolding.
But the bravery and calmness of the young boy who tried to defend his mother and their merchandise from the ruthless criminals had caught his attention.
Kazuya knew the boy was scared (it was one of the gifts of being a Whisperer. They could easily sense emotions) but the boy didn't let it show.
The criminals were somewhat confused of that too, Kazuya could tell, but they wouldn't be intimidated by a mere boy, no matter how determined that boy seemed to be.
He whistled low. It was to call the fairies to him.
"Kazuya, what is it?" a fairy asked, sitting on his shoulder.
"Do you think you can call the animals to scare away those bullies?" Kazuya pointed to the scene bellow.
"But we hate humans! Why should we help them?" Another fairy stopped playing with a leaf to glare at him.
"Kazuya, let them handle their own fights," a fairy who was standing on his knee advised.
He smiled. "Alright. I'm sorry I asked you girls. Go now," he dismissed gently.
The fairies waved goodbye and their little wings fluttered away.
He knew he should follow the fairies' advice and be a simple onlooker but he found himself drawn to protect both mother and child.
They reminded him of his own family. If someone had just been kind enough to take them in when they were pursued by Whisperer hunters, then maybe he didn't have to separate with them. Maybe Kazuya's family would still have been whole now.
At the ground, the criminals were stalking nearer to their target, knives on their hands and sneers on their faces.
"Oh well, I guess I should do this myself," Kazuya said. He twirled his hand and small bubbles started to appear. He whispered something to the bubbles and they scattered to all directions.
Shortly after, the animals drove away the robbers.
15 years later, Kazuya still looked the same while Yamapi had obviously aged. Now, Yamapi liked to act like the big brother and Kazuya let him. There was no harm in that, anyway.
The memory recall however, reminded him that Yamapi was already 25. He should be long married by now but because he was constantly worried of Kazuya and they had to move from one place to another to avoid suspicion of Kazuya's identity, he had no time to find a suitable wife.
One of this days, I'll find you a suitable wife, he projected to Yamapi, determined.
Yamapi laughed. "I was worried because you were looking at me all weird. So that's what it was. Don't be bothered by simple things like that, Kazuya. I'll find a wife in time."
"Mother would have wanted you to settle down already," Kazuya insisted.
"If you would just marry me then there'd be no problem," Yamapi teased.
Kazuya looked at him, deadpanned. "Yeah right. You don't like me that way. Besides, it's against the law to get married to the same gender."
"Well, I bet that law's gonna be changed soon," Yamapi retorted in the same teasing tone.
"What are you talking about?" Kazuya asked, confused. Why would the law be changed?
"I heard the maids gossiping that the Prince is quite attached to you. He even called you 'love' according to them."
"T-that's-" Kazuya stuttered, his cheeks flaming in embarrassment.
"Oh you should have seen the affection in Prince Jin's eyes as he looked at the Whisperer! You could tell he's in love!" Yamapi immitated the dreamy tone the maid had used.
"I love you."
That memory came to his mind, making his cheeks redder.
"See? You're blushing!" Yamapi laughed. "I wonder what the Prince's reaction would be once he learns that the cure to his sickness involves you kissing him?"
"Stop it Pi," Kazuya reprimanded. When Yamapi didn't shut up, Kazuya waved his hand and Yamapi's laugh became soundless.
Eh? Yamapi mouthed but no sound came out.
Kazuya grinned then snapped his fingers.
"That was bad, Kazuya!" Yamapi complained.
"Sorry. Told you you should shut up when I tell you to."
Yamashita sighed. "Come on, let's eat before you decide to turn me into some kind of fancy meal."
"You know Pi, that's not a bad idea!"
Yamapi smacked his arm.
They entered the dining room laughing only to be cut short with the inquisitive look of the Queen who also happened to be in the room.
"You are Kazuya, am I correct?" She asked.
Kazuya cautiously nodded.
To their surprise, the Queen ran straight to him and hugged him tight.
"Pardon my insolence, your Grace but I'm starting to understand why Prince Jin is so clingy," Kazuya muttered.
The queen laughed. "He's adorable, is he not my King?"
The King nodded indulgently at his Queen. He had not seen the woman so happy in a long time.
"I knew I heard your name somewhere. Jin used to go on and on about you. Honestly, I thought he was speaking nonsense but now that you're here..." the Queen said, her eyes sparkling.
You didn't have to be a Whisperer to know that the Queen was excited.
He and Yamapi awkwardly stood there.
"Oh how silly of me to forget! Do sit down."
"Thank you, your highness," Yamapi said.
"Your majesty, there's something I have to tell you about the Kiss of life," Kazuya directed his statement to the King. By this time, he thought it more convenient to speak out loud. Conveying thoughts to more than one person at the same time is quite tiring.
"Go on," the King prodded.
"To us Whisperers, the Kiss of Life is simply a testimony of our love for another Whisperer. It is something to mark our chosen partners. Other magical creatures would know instantly a Whisperer's partner once we give the Kiss of Life. That is the extent of that to us. But one of our ancestors found out that it had a different effect on humans. It binds the humans to the Whisperer and the Whisperer to the human."
"Binds? What does that mean exactly?" The King asked.
"It means they feel each other's emotion and experiences. That is why we are able to 'cure' the humans sickness. The human simply share the Whisperers life force that is stronger than any mortal sickness. In the event that either of them is hurt physically, the other goes through that too. Do you understand what that means?"
Everyone in the table fell silent. They all knew what that implied. If Kazuya gives the Kiss of Life to Jin and some fool kills Kazuya, the Prince will die after him.
"But that's not all. The bond between the two will be so strong that no one will be able to come between them. They will be special to each other and their words will be far more important to the other than anyone else's."
"Why do you look so grave?" The Queen asked, confused. "I find it rather romantic actually."
Kazuya gaped at her. "If I give the Kiss of Life to Prince Jin, he will heed my words more than yours and the King's."
"Oh that? Well no worries. You seem like a sensible lad. Finally, someone who can knock some sense into that boy!" The Queen said with glee.
"I am sorry to interrupt your Highness, but the way I see it, Prince Jin wouldn't be able to let go of Kazuya after the Kiss of Life is given and he's so attached to Kazuya already..." Yamapi trailed, worry in his voice.
"Then he would just have to convince Kazuya to stay or perhaps be his Queen," the King said, nonchalant.
Kazuya nearly choked on the water he was drinking. "Um, aren't you bothered that the Prince fancies me?"
"Why would we be?" The Queen asked, genuinely puzzled.
"Because I'm a whisperer?"
"Because he's male?"
He and Yamapi spoke at the same time.
"None of that matters. As long as my son is healthy and fit to rule the Kingdom, he is free to love or marry anyone he pleases." It was the King who answered.
"Isn't marrying with the same gender against the law?" he asked.
The Queen's amused smile was directed to him as she said, "In less than a month, Jin would be King. By then, he could change the law if he so wished."
"What about you, your Grace? Yamapi told me you do not like Whisperers?" he asked the Queen.
"True. But then, did you like humans before meeting your friend?" The Queen asked, glancing at Yamashita.
Kazuya was stunned. He had not thought of it that way before. "I..."
"Oh my dear lad. Love and destiny changes a lot of things. Those two are stronger than any rule or law. Always remember that." The Queen reached for his hand and gently squeezed it.
The King smiled at him. "We can't order you to like the Prince, I know that. When you cure him, you are free to go. I gave you and your friend my word after all. Although I have to make sure you would be alright, for yours and the Prince's safety. But at least give Jin a chance to prove himself to you. I've never seen him so alive since his sickness and just one look at you had his eyes sparkling. It must be something deep he's feeling for you. So get to know him first before you make your decision to leave or not. I'm asking this not as a King but as a father."
