That is really feeble of him. Maybe he's got bad money issues himself and was just trying to spare you the grief? I agree it is none of his business.

I adore my debit Visa... in fact if it wasn't for my debit Visa I would spend entirely too much money... cash in my wallet gets spent.

I would have turned around and asked the guy if he was offering to pay for my stuff. :0)
