The beach was a busy place on the weekends. Everyone loved the water, the fun, and the light of the sun. It was the sun that drew him there every day. When the adults were busy working, or the children were busy at school, he was lying on the beach.
He'd lie in the sun, soaking in the light he'd missed for so long. The darkness had stolen away everything from him, mental and physical.
His skin had paled so much from the shadows. Like a heavy black cloak, the dark never allowed light to tan his body. Why was it that his skin became darker when he was in the glorious light, but it lightened in the hideous dark?
Surely there was some biological answer that any instructor would spend hours uselessly explaining...
But Riku knew the real answer. He knew it as well as he knew the darkness itself. The spirits of those who live in remorse, envy, or any other brother of the darkness were always pale colored. As they passed on from the living to the dead, their ghosts were always a pallid shade instead of a rich color like the happy living.
That's why children wear white sheets over their bodies at costume parties. They represent the poor souls who are torn by darkness.
So he would continue to spend his days in the sun, removing the darkness from his body by letting his skin tan.
