I say go with the clothes/gear. I love getting stuff like that, especially from places I've never been to :D I bet they would, too.

OK, I bought a road atlas with lots of pics of cities and info (that doesn't require too much English knowledge). I also got a photobook that I want to fill half-way with stuff from Chicago and U of I, and the other half with stuff from my time there.
I was also thinking some touristy stuff from the area would be nice.

I'm giving mine candles and potholders, but you knew that. I need to get something small that the father in particular might like though. Potholders are a kitchen thing, and candles are kind of a family thing. I've been toying with the idea of making name bookmarks for them...

I veto the dvd idea. Just sounds silly, no offense.

Then again, I also haven't studied Japanese culture or anything...I personally would bring shot glasses or a sweet kitchen set. (I collect shot glasses from around the world and do love my kitchen. I have a chopstick/tea set that I enjoy.) I would suggest something useful that they could use once a month or so. Maybe even less than that, but something they would have sitting around to remember you by. Perhaps one of those ceramic pie holders. Do they eat a lot of pie?? Tee hee.

Love ya, Sara
