Summary: Sehun hates it when babies cry

Sehun hates when babies cry.

More when it’s the pretty baby who lives across their apartment. The baby is so tiny but his cries are the loudest and Sehun can hear it from his room. His mom said babies are supposed to cry. But Sehun disagrees. When he was a baby he didn’t cry much- he hears his parents saying that a lot. Then why does the pretty baby cry a lot?

His Mom often takes him to the baby’s home. The baby screams a lot when he sees him. He even tries to climb out of his crib. Those times Sehun scolds the baby and tells him not to do so. But the baby just makes more weird noises and drools. Even if Sehun doesn’t like it he wipes the baby’s drool. Though it’s a bit hard. The crib is too high for him- Sehun heard the baby’s Mommy telling his Mom that it is because the baby is too energetic. Though Sehun isn’t sure what does it mean? Probably naughty. Yes, the baby is very naughty.

Oh. Has Sehun told the baby’s name yet? His name is Luhan. Even if Sehun doesn’t like him, in secret he thinks the name is very pretty.

Secretly, Sehun also thinks Luhan likes him a lot. Or he wouldn’t stop crying each time Luhan’s mother put him in Sehun’s lap. Those times, he just sighs as he realizes he has to take care of Luhan.

Why can’t Luhan’s Mom understand that Sehun is only four?

But in secret, Sehun actually likes it.

He likes taking care of Luhan.

Luhan is seven already but he is still a monkey.

Sehun doesn’t understand how does the boy always jump around. He has even started going to school. Yet, Sehun has to look after him. There isn’t a day Luhan won’t come back home with a bruised knee or an elbow.

His mother yells at him. His papa yells at him. Sehun yells at him. Even Aunt Kyungsoo who loves spoiling Luhan, scolds him. But Luhan just never seems to listen. He jumps. He sings. He runs. He screams. He breaks…..like everything.

Even after all these, Sehun wonders, how his Mom says Luhan is an angel. NO, he isn’t. Definitely no. It’s probably because every time the monkey boy comes to his house, he screams,

“Aunty Baekhyun, you look so pretty.”

And his Mom just dies at that. She even puts an extra scoop of ice cream in Luhan’s plastic bowl.

Sehun just shakes his head. Why doesn’t his Mom understand Luhan is just a sneaky little boy who knows his way to trick people?

Sehun is ten but he thinks he is smarter than his mother.

Absolutely.

Luhan is ten and he is sill a crybaby. Why can’t he understand that Sehun can’t forever be dumb and stay in elementary school? No matter how many times Sehun explains to him that Sehun will pick him up from school everyday and walk home together, the younger still stays upset. And He can’t stand his best friend upset at all.

“What if you make a lot of friends and don’t walk me home anymore?” Luhan says, eyes sparkling with tears and lips curling into a pout.

Sehun’s little heart clenches as he sees his best friend tearing up.

“Don’t be so silly, Lu. You are my only best friend.”

“Say pinky promise.”

“pinky promise.”

In secret, Sehun is actually worried.

Not only Luhan is an accident-prone but also an easy target for bullies. He worries he will have to see Luhan getting hurt a lot now that he won’t be there to protect him. But he promises himself if someone lays a single finger on his baby, he will break him into pieces.

After all he is Luhan’s protector.

So what he is only thirteen?

He has punched Chen pretty hard, not caring how much of a big problem he is going to face now. Even though they are cousins, both hate each other’s gut. The reason is pretty obvious- Luhan. Being a prankster Chen never forgets to tease Luhan to the point that the younger ends up wailing like a baby. Well, he is a baby. According to Sehun. And no one make’s Sehun’s baby cry. No one. Period.

Anyway, back to the punching story.

No matter how much of a hot headed Sehun is, he doesn’t hit people. (rolling his eyes always has been enough?) But Chen has crossed his limits by pranking Luhan into getting locked on the rooftop of their apartment building. Does he not know about his baby being afraid of high places?

Then it even takes horribly long time for Sehun to find out about it. When he reaches there he finds his baby terribly shaken up, (and not mention wetting himself).

Sehun can’t really understand how Chen being a sensible adult can do this to a twelve years old kid.

“Just try to do anymore of these dirty thing on him, I will finish you.”

After that incident Luhan sure does get ill but Chen gets the scare of his life.

And never comes to visit them anymore.

Sehun is sixteen and he is in love.

The girl is very pretty. She is in the same class as he is. Her name is Soojung. When he introduces her to Luhan, he thinks there is a weird mix of happiness and sadness written on Luhan’s face. Not being able to tell it, he asks Luhan. Luhan just hugs him tightly.

“I am so happy for you, Sehun.” He screams.

“Its Hyung for you Luhan,” Sehun, like always never miss to correct it. But boy, does Luhan ever listen.

“Are you really happy?” So Sehun asks.

“Yes, I am. As long as she makes you happy, I am happy too.” The younger replies. Sehun thinks may be Luhan has grown up finally.

“Sehun, will you let me hang out with you and her?” Luhan whispers suddenly clinging onto Sehun’s hand, so Soojung won’t hear. At the sight, Sehun notices, she only rolls her eyes.

Sehun nods and ruffles his hair, “yes, silly.”

“Yayy.”

Sehun does ignore Soojung’s silent plea of not letting Luhan join, as all three walks to Luhan’s favorite fast food place.

Sehun barely sees Luhan anymore. He feels guilty. Sehun is too busy with his senior year and girlfriend. He can’t help it. Sure he makes plan with Luhan but end up canceling them for very important reasons.

And Luhan says he understands. So Sehun knows he shouldn’t worry much.

But he does. He misses him so much. Whenever he sees Luhan’s face in the hallway, he feels his heart dropping as the younger looks so sad. But yet he smiles and waves his hands and mouth a miss you.

And Sehun just wants to hug his baby tightly.

But he doesn’t as Luhan goes back inside his flat.

When he to returns home after his date, his Mom only gives him side-glances.

“Mom, I know you don’t like Soojung. But don’t you want me to be happy.”

“She can’t make you happy,” his mother deadpans.

“Maa, I love her. Why are you being like this?” Sehun whines. He doesn’t understand at all why his mother dislikes his girlfriend so much. Soojung has been nothing but nice to her- bringing her flowers, cakes and cookies.

“Have you seen Luhan? He hasn’t come by for a while.” She says instead.

“I don’t know. May be he is busy.”

“I miss my gubu.” She mumbles as she leaves the kitchen.

“I miss him too.”

Sehun doesn’t say it aloud though.

“Let’s go hangout tomorrow all day.”

“Will you ditch me?” Luhan sounds so skeptical, Sehun feels horrible. Plus there is no way he is not going to give his best friend a day on his birthday.

“What?? No. I promise. It’s going to be the us day. Please, baby.” The nickname for Luhan unconsciously slips his tongue. He hasn’t called Luhan by baby since he started dating Soojung. What?? He was just trying to be a good boyfriend.

“Okay.”

Sehun barely catches the okay. But he feels happy. And starts planning everything he is going to surprise Luhan with.

Luck just doesn’t seem to be on his side. He ends up breaking the promise anyway. Soojung fell and broke her leg. And she won’t let Sehun leave her side at all.

Even though Sehun feels horrible, he calls Luhan and tells him how he has to accompany Soojung now.

And Luhan says, “okay.” Just like Sehun thought he would.

Luhan indeed has matured a lot and won’t let one birthday make him upset.

That’s what Sehun thinks though.

He is so worried about Soojung that he doesn’t even hear the agitation in Luhan’s Papa’s voice later that day when he calls looking for Luhan.

He doesn’t see Luhan for the next whole month. Sehun doesn’t even know how that happened. Strangely his mother has stopped talking to him too. No matter how many times he tries she won’t speak at all and it makes him worried. So he tries asking his Dad what happened to her.

“Chanyeol, tell that boy not to worry about me!” She snaps.

His dad doesn’t even dare to say anything.

Sehun sighs.

Soojung has gone to visit her uncle, so Sehun doesn’t really have anything to do. May be catching up with Luhan is what he should do then, he thinks since his Mom won’t bother to talk.

But no matter how many times he calls Luhan’s cell, the younger never answers anymore. When he calls his house number, only Aunt Yixing picks up and tells him Luhan isn’t available.

Even though they live across one hallway, it seems like another planet. Even the idea of going to his house sounds weird to him now.

Since Sehun is a senior he barely has any classes with Luhan. But he knows where Luhan’s classes are. Next day he goes to look for his best friend there.

“Luhan’s hasn’t been to school for a whole month already.”

Sehun thinks it’s a horrible joke.

Luhan isn’t that dumb to skip school like that. Uncle Kris is the most frightening person he has ever faced. And Luhan won’t ever dare to make his Papa angry.

Sehun knows his Mom won’t reply to him, but he still asks her, “Mom, have you seen Luhan lately?”

Her mother’s head shoots up. And she glares at Sehun like he has murdered someone asking about Luhan.

“Mom, please. I know you are angry at me. I don’t even know why. Unless it’s about Soojung. But just because you can’t stand her doesn’t mean I can’t date her. I love her. You are being ridiculous.”

Sehun only stares at his mother wide- eyed as he feels her warm hand against his cheek. She looks scarily angry.

“Don’t ever. Don’t ever tell me I am being ridiculous. I do not care if you love that girl or not. I do not care whom you choose to love. Just don’t ever utter that sneaky bitch’s name in front of me.”

She turns around and about to walk away but Sehun is too quick to hold her hand.

“Mom, please. You are scaring me. What happened? Did she say anything to you?”

“I don’t know you anymore, Sehun. I just don’t. Please leave me alone.”

Sehun feels confused and lost.

Luhan. His mother. Why is everyone being like this to him?

“Sehun?”

Sehun sees his dad standing by the door.

“Don’t be too upset with your Mom. She is just worried about Luhan.”

“W-what happened to Luhan, Dad?” He asks, voice cracking.

“Go see him.”

When Aunty Yixing opens the door, Sehun’s eyes widen. She doesn’t look like the happy go mommy anymore, who babies Luhan twenty four seven. She looks pale and the dark circles seem prominent under her eyes. He thinks she looks thin too.

“Aunty, can I see Luhan?” he asks awkwardly. Even if he sees how uncomfortable and skeptical she looks, he prays she will let him.

“He is in his room,” after a pregnant pause, she mumbles.

Sehun doesn’t get the time to say thanks as he dashes towards the younger’s room.

And He feels the whole world falling apart as he sees an almost dead looking Luhan sleeping, and uncle Kris just sitting there, by the younger’s bedside, stroking his hair.

“Sehun?? You?”

Sehun feels his throat and tongue getting numb suddenly as he can’t say anything.

He mechanically leads himself to Luhan. He barely crouches in front of the sleeping boy as his fingers brushes over the pale face.

“Luhan.” His voice cracks.

He doesn’t even notice Luhan’s father getting up, and leaving the room with a sigh.

Sehun doesn’t leave Luhan’s side at all. He doesn’t pick up Soojung’s call. He doesn’t listen to anybody. All he thinks how to nurse Luhan back to health. Which seems too impossible till now.

The younger barely talks. Even seeing Sehun, he doesn’t seem excited. He looks lost. He doesn’t even eat. Sometimes Luhan’s Papa, sometimes Mama, sometimes he himself- they all keep forcing Luhan to eat.

But Luhan just won’t eat. He just nods his head and pushes away the food held in front of his mouth.

“We don’t know Sehun. We don’t know.” Aunt Yixing cries at last after much of Sehun’s pestering.

“On his birthday, he was so excited about going out with you. Then that girl called and told him something. He was so upset but won’t tell me anything. He only told me he had to get ready for your “us day” and then left saying you will meet him at the movie.”

Sehun listens, frozen on his spot.

“It gets too late but he doesn’t return. His Papa gets worried and call you. But you said he wasn’t with you.”

Sehun gulps. He feels like throwing up.

“Then we get a call from him at midnight. It was raining. Wufan was about to call police too. He won’t even tell me what happened. He just told me he was going to get Luhan. Then he called me next morning saying Luhan is in the hospital.”

Sehun feels dizzy. And horrible. But he doesn’t feel the wetness against his cheek.

“He had stayed there for a week. But nobody will tell me what’s wrong with my son. And I am his mother.” Aunt Yixing sniffs.

“But since he came back, he has been so weird. Won’t eat, won’t talk, won’t do anything. He has become horribly thin. The doctor said if he doesn’t come out of this, he might starve to death.”

“I am the worst best friend ever, aren’t I?” Sehun says, cupping Luhan ‘s face. Luhan just stares back, eyes void of any emotion. It hasn’t taken much for Sehun to realize how much Soojung has harmed his and Luhan’s relationship- and now his baby was dying, his precious baby, who he promised to never leave, who he promised to be a protector for rest of his life.

He is indeed the worst best friend ever.

“I broke our rules too. I chose a girl over you.” Sehun mumbles, tears rolling down his face.

“I am sorry. I am sorry. I am so sorry. Please talk to me.”

Sehun feels the crying isn’t even enough. He kisses Luhan’s face and promises again and again about how he will never leave Luhan.

“You are the worst person.”

Sehun startles when he hears the soft voice.

“I am.” Sehun nods.

“you said you will never forget me.”

Tears roll down Sehun cheeks as he shakes his head. “I am sorry.”

“You never loved me. You only love Soojung.”

“Baby…..”

“But I don’t know why I still love you.”

Sehun freezes in his spot. Luhan loves him. He best friend has been in love with him all along and he never understood it.

“Lu…”

“You didn’t even have to love me. I just wanted you as my best friend.”

Luhan has grown into a beautiful boy. Sometime Sehun can’t even take his eyes off him. Sometimes he wants to kiss him senseless and fuck him all night. But he can’t. Luhan isn’t his. He is someone else’s.

And the thing is the boy is just a kid, even younger than Luhan by a whole year. His name is Jongin. And he always clings to Luhan like a koala and babies his best friend, occasionally giving Sehun side-glances.

Sehun is twenty-two and a full ass grown up, yet it bothers him so much when Luhan’s boyfriend appears out of nowhere and ruin their us time.

Well, at least now Sehun knows what it feels.

But Sehun is happy that the kid makes his best friend happy. Though every time that Jongin kid kisses Luhan in front of him, Sehun feels like punching his gut out for violating his best friend.

In secret, may be it’s also because he can’t kiss Luhan like this.

Though Sehun broke up with Soojung and went back to being the perfect best friend he was, Luhan didn’t really give in.

It took a while for all of them to get Luhan healthy again.

Now Luhan is nineteen but still the monkey he used to be. And Sehun has never been happier. But however everyone still treats Luhan like a dying child and Luhan isn’t scared of his Papa anymore.

Uncle Kris still tries to act all angry and cold but Luhan hugs him warm and he melts. The sight always makes Sehun smile.

Sehun is glad everything is okay. Everyone is happy- moreover his best friend.

He easily can just pretend he is too.
