A thought on politics

My job is not to design games. It's to mediate between a dozen or more competing ideas, each of which is presented as the One True Way. Sometimes my own ideas win the day; more often, they don't. Compromise is a bitch. I guess what's even more of a bitch is that "compromise" often isn't the right word for what you have to end up doing; it's easy to find that middle ground ... it's just that the middle ground generally is a shitty, hacked-together solution, and what you really need to do is find out the best components of all of the plans, make them work well together, and then somehow keep the people with the ideas you couldn't use from getting whiny and pissy and taking their ball to go play at home. Ego mass is a huge issue in collaborative affairs.
