absolutely perfect. I love how Rose's anger and disappointment threaten to close off her feelings for the Doctor. I'm so, so glad the Doctor was able to show her what he really intended and what he really felt. I love his alien-ness in this and the way Rose still loves him even after she makes up her mind to go home, and I could really feel the edge of disaster when she told him to take her home and he said no! Lucky he is telepathic, because that was a very close call.
Yay I'm glad you like it! :D It was super draining to write because ALL OF THOSE FEELS and I made myself sad. >.<
The end of GITF always rubs me the wrong way, because there's no way that Rose would just let all of that go. She's never been afraid to stand up to him, to demand that he explain, and from her perspective he abandoned her. After her father's death and Jimmy Stone and even Mickey, who was unwilling to come with, I think that she wouldn't -let- anyone abandon her, even the Doctor, without a fight.
And I wanted to get in Rose's head, to show her strength because this episode really doesn't fit with ALL of the other episodes in terms of characterization.
I really really loved this! You portray Rose's tumultuous mix of thoughts and emotions perfectly. She isn't going to let anyone treat her like crap, not even the Doctor. The thing that rang the most true for me is that she would have a fear that she is losing too much of herself. I've felt that way both when I have fallen in love and when I became a Mom for the first time. You sort of lose touch of who you are separate from the other person. Oneness with your partner is amazing (and I think the Doctor and Rose have that) but it is easy to forget who you are without them and that can be very scary. You take this from an angst fest to a fluffy ending in a really believable and satisfying way. Something had to happen between GiTF and Cybermen so why not this? I'll be smiling all day now after reading this and Bear's new chapter for her band AU. Adding it to my GiTF rec list
Thank you! OH MY GOD THAT ENDING WAS A BITCH AND A HALF. Before the bit with the telepathy I was staring at the computer screen going 'FUCK HOW AM I GOING TO MAKE THIS RIGHT' because it looked an awful lot like she was going to leave him.
BUT EMERGENCY TELEPATHY TO THE RESCUE.
The losing pieces of yourself thing was something that I really wanted to put in, because people change each other. And when you're so close to someone it's easy to get wrapped up in them. It's easy to incorporate them into your identity. Rose and the Doctor have the added challenge of a power differential and perceived worth (he's a great and powerful alien and she's just a shopgirl--please note the sarcasm here) which highlight the issue. Even though in the reality of the show the writers (most of them) and RTD went out of their way to demonstrate that Rose and the Doctor are equals situations like GITF only exacerbate anxieties.
ahh this was fix-it fic at its best! All of the worst parts of GitF were fixed, especially the part where Reinette gets to see inside his head (augh). This was lovely. I was happy that Rose stood up for herself but the Doctor didn't let her leave without a fight.
Thank you! With a prompt like 'Iris' by Goo Goo Dolls it had to be angsty, and GITF is the perfect angst episode to fix. :D
The way that Rose just left him and all the baggage this episode created were just brushed under the rug really bothered me, so I was pumped for a chance to fix that. :D
Great missing scene! I like that even though Rose is devastated, she's also totally over the Doctor's BS and ready to stand up for herself--which is one of my favorite things about her.
As lovely as the story is, I LOVE the end. That last section, from the Rose's feeling of being overwhelmed by telepathy to the Doctor's awe of her to "his brain caught up with his lips and tongue, which were doing remarkably well on their own" (ha!), was awesome. :)
I was worried that the ending would come across as rushed, because for a while I really didn't know how I was going to get from a Rose who was adamant that the Doctor needed to take her home to a Rose who would voluntarily kiss him.
It's really important to me that Rose stands up for herself. I feel like she would have been a lot more upset over what happened in GitF and that there would have been consequences for their relationship. :D So glad you enjoyed it!
