ECCC Day 2, That Meme I Didn't Finish and Other Stuffs

Mar 23, 2010 20:14

Thank you to rose_etta for the "Green Drink" on my profile! It's virtually delicious. :D

ECCC SUNDAY

Sunday morning started out on a low with many creators showing up an hour late due to the switch to Daylight Savings Time, including Geoff Johns. By noon, his table had a sign proclaiming, "Geoff Johns has left the building. NO MORE SIGNINGS." WHAT?! Yeah, so depressed and aggravated I didn't go to either panel I was planning on attending.

Turns out, I really should've gone to the Superman panel. Not only was it a bunch of fans creators talking about what makes Clark awesome (♥♥♥), but Johns showed up unannounced. /regrets

I did end up having some memorable conversations with a few creators throughout the day.

While I was talking with Jen Van Meter, my daughter called me to ask where she could find the water fountain. We ended up discussing trying to balance work and family. It turns out Jimmy Palmiotti called her during that little Power Girl kerfuffle and told her, "At least no one referred to you as Greg Rucka's wife!" He told her that the biggest day in his and Amanda Connor's relationship was the day he became "Amanda's husband". As Jen and Greg's children get older, she's enjoying working more. She signed one of my JSA issues, "Yay Moms!" :D

James Robinson was wonderful. Ashley and I both spoke with him for quite awhile about JSA and JLA, Starman and The Golden Age. I can't remember all that was said because it was considerable and varied, but I do remember he was very giving and honest. I know he killed Lian Harper and I know killing her is sexist, racist and a waste of a good character's potential. I asked the Lian question at DC Nation and Geoff Johns gave me a rage ring over it. However, seeing other people direct their anger toward Robinson will likely just make me angry at those people instead of at him. Seriously, he was doing his job - mandated by editorial - and if it had to be done, he at least did it respectfully. Also, he is preemptively forgiven for turning Todd evil (again!). *glares at June solicits* Please remind me of this when if I forget it when if the time comes.

I made sure to thank Pete Tomasi for all his work on JSA. Turns out that back-in-the-day when Robinson and Goyer first proposed it, Pete had to convince DC. They didn't want to do it because the last JSA ongoing had failed. He had to argue with them for several months before they agreed to a trial run.

Also, Pat Gleason is adorable. I thanked him for Miri's Star Sapphire uniform. He said that her actually wearing clothes was "very much intentional".

Matt Fraction won me over, big time. We ended up talking for about fifteen minutes, as there was nobody behind me. I told him that I'd dropped Uncanny X-Men six months ago when the X-Men moved to their island and started only fighting for themselves, rather than for "those that fear and hate them". That's not the X-Men, that's the Brotherhood. He agreed! He talked about his arc for them and he pitched a few post-Second Coming spoilers (Twice, he jokingly threatened to kill me if I posted them on the internet. Since, I haven't seen them elsewhere, I'm going to respect that request for now.) He made it sound awesome and very much X-Men. He gave me a money back guarantee! Told me if I buy Uncanny for a year and don't like it, bring it to him next year and he'll buy it all back from me at cover price. He gave me a password. Matt was just very energetic and engaging and his enthusiasm for his work and the characters was infectious.

Oh, and Ashley wanted me to be sure to thank Alex Maleev for drawing Daredevil "like a pornstar". He blushed and said he'd take "take that compliment very personally". Turns out he was his own model for Matt Murdock.

I also congratulated JH Williams III on his GLAAD Award, to which Dean Trippe (sitting next to him) congratulated him, too. JH had found out at 2 o'clock that morning. (Suspiciously, the same time the bars closed... ) Anyway, despite Satler's response to a question at DC Nation that the Batwoman ongoing's publication date was eminent, JH says the book is floundering and he doubts he's going to be on the title when and if it sees daylight. :(

MEME:
The prompts for these were all really awesome and I'm sorry I didn't get to them all.

1. Amadeus Cho
2. Alan Scott
3. Jay Garrick
4. Jesse Chambers
5. Amanda Waller
6. Michael Holt
7. Tim Drake
8. SV!J'onn J'onzz
9. Karen Starr
10. Bucky Barnes
11. Dick Grayson
12. Barbara Gordon
13. Nathan Summers
14. Rick Tyler
15. Todd Rice

wabbitseason asks, Amanda Waller, Barbara Gordon -- torrid affair or just friends? Inquiring minds want to know.
Though definitely not friends, The Oracle and The Wall have a longstanding... well, Amanda wouldn't exactly call it a relationship, and as a rivalry she'll never admit it's one-sided. She doesn't like operatives slipping through her fingers; she doesn't like disappointment; she especially doesn't like losing. She considers The Oracle her protogé and if she follows Barbara's exploits closely after she leaves, it's no more intelligence than she'd do for any other former-Squad member. Except how Amanda feels the thrill of a challenge wherever Babs is concerned, and she finds nothing more erotic than the thrilling press of calculated danger.

angel_gidget says, Rick Tyler is in the hospital. Who does Amanda Waller call as a contact?
Checkmate's White King, Michael Holt. Michael would be too upset at her retaining his JSA teammate for Amanda to risk any political ramifications for holding him. Besides, she immediately took a DNA sample, so she has all she needs to study why Miraclo only works for Tylers, if it really was the basis for Bane's Venom and how it can be adapted.

Jay Garrick has to cook something for Amadeus Cho. What's on the menu and why?
Macaroni and Cheese. All kids like Mac & Cheese, right? It's all Jay really knows how to cook besides sandwiches and camping grub. There are drawbracks to being married to the most wonderful wife in the world for over sixty years.

Alan Scott is stuck in the mental dreamscape of Barbara Gordon. Will he survive?
Babs has very racy dreams and Alan's doing just fine as long as she's dreaming about Dick Grayson, Bruce Wayne, and even Ted Kord. His brain breaks when she starts dreaming about Dinah Lance. Dinah's little girl! Junior! Doing... things! He gets out of there pronto, because he could've left at any time with enough willpower.

Rick Tyler has to take care of Nathan Summers stuck as a child. Does he pull it off?
No problem, says Rick. If he can handle a kid with an all-powerful genie in a post-apocalyptic future, he can certainly handle a de-aged messiah from the same kind of future. Rick is wrong. Nathan escapes Rick's supervision within two minutes.

fictionknight asks, Jesse Chambers is making out with Michael Holt - what is SV!J'onn J'onnz's reaction when he walks in on them?
Since J'onn is a telepath, he immediately senses something is amiss in the minds of both Jesse and Michael. He does all he can to break the mind control because he knows Jesse wouldn't be having an extramarital affair without Rick's permission and Michael wouldn't cheat on Pieter Sasha.

In entirely unrelated notes:
  • DC and Marvel are both qualifying fandoms for Remix this year. The finished fic isn't due until May 9th, so a week and a half after comicsbigbang. It was really hard to narrow down the four fandoms I'm willing to remix. Sign-up is at AO3 until March 31st!
  • I also want to finish a fic for lgbtfest this year. I've already spotted two prompts that are particularly inspiring. I've put in my prompts; make sure you put in yours! Prompting runs through March 24th!
  • My latest month recc'ing for crack_van is almost over. There is one person signed-up for DC COMICS after me. Please consider recc'ing for DC!
  • I finally have a handle on my comicsbigbang... I think. Now, just to finish it and my merry_marvels fic on time.
  • There is an annual fan convention in Western Washington: bitchinparty. I did not know this until too late to go this year. *pouts* Who's up for coming next year?
  • I have my first RPS in Omar Vizquel/Ozzie Guillen. I may need therapy, but I'd do practically anything for fic. *hangs head in shame*
