The Social Network

I just saw The Social Network and I have to say that the Oscars seriously robbed Andrew Garfield of his Supporting Actor nomination. I never understood what all the fuss was about with this guy, but I get it now. I loved his character and was really upset about the dissolvement of his and Mark's friendship. He was such a good friend; so honest and ( Read more... )

I haven't been keeping up with Oscar nominations but now that you've mentioned it I am not all that surprised. I mean yes, Andrew did play his part well, but it wasn't as if it was a very challenging part to play. he was just playing a normal (albeit intelligent) guy caught up in extraordinary circumstances. any mildly-talented actor could play that. so yeah, to gain an oscar nod in my mind you have play a somewhat challenging part, not just a crowd-pleasing one.

plus he would've been up against Geoffrey and... yeah... theres no comparison to Geoffrey in my mind. ;) Wonder will the academy agree or favour Christian Bale again. *shrug*

I agree that the part wasn't much of a challenge in terms of WHO he had to portrayed, but I going more on HOW he portrayed him. Truthfully, when I first started watching the movie, my sentiments were the same as yours. I didn't understand what people were talking about considering that character seemed sort of meek, just the "nice guy". But what I really liked was how his performance grew stronger and stronger as things progressed with the company. It was subtle, but it resonated with me.

As for Oscar noms for challenging parts, I really don't see his performance as any less challenging then say, Anna Kendrick in Up in the Air. You know I love Anna, but I even put in review of the movie that her performance didn't seem like all the critics were making it out to be. I didn't expect Andrew to WIN for the role, but I do think that he deserves a nom.

whats the difference with who he portrays and how he portrays him? i still think that its a fairly simple role to play. all he had to do was have chemistry with whoever played Mark, be able to look like he knew what he was talking about when talking like an intelligent business student, and look hurt and frustrated a lot of the time and make the audience feel sorry for him. i'm sorry i just dont see the challenge and must've missed the subtleties.

And i agree, i think it was a BIG stretch to give Anna a nomination. there was not a whole lot that was special about her character (still love you Anna). i guess they were running short of nominees or something.

i guess we'll have to agree to disagree about Andrew.

It's sort of like when you have this stereotypical character and you expect certain behavior and then there's a twist that makes it seem like he or she is a breath of fresh air in the role. Like it could have been the same ole, same ole, but because of the way the actor portrayed the character it was so much more. I can't explain it really. I think we will just have to agree to disagree because I can't make you feel what I felt.

Right? I came out of that theatre with his face in my head, and his character. Jesse was fabulous with the way that he portrayed Mark and IMO, definitely deserved his nod. But I honestly think that Andrew needed to get some recognition by the Academy. The subtlety in his face and expressions, it was a really good performance. That little smile when he's about to punch Sean and then doesn't ...

I laughed so hard during that scene! I give props to JT for actually looking scared when we all know Eduardo couldn't swat a fly. Even though his character would have been justified in punching him.
