I have been to Makah and the case there is very different and shouldn't be the default. When i made my Ummrah , the separation was very very clear in Al Madina Al Manoura , the women prayed in different parts ( which were large parts of the Mosque ) and had their own entrances ( though some entrances were mixed )

I don't think traditions are inherently bad, but I do think it is a good idea to take stock every once in a while and make sure that the traditions the community is following have not morphed into something that makes them contrary to the teachings and ideas of Islam ( ... )

Some of the women even advocated building a glass wall to pray behind, which is so much worse than a separate room IMO, even though I'm not sure I can articulate why.

It's the fishbowl phenomenon. The point that you put someone behind glass, you are making them even less of a person than they already are. Sociological test subjects are behind glass. Reptiles in the zoo are behind glass. People praying should not be.

yes dammit men and women can manage to have platonic friendships in Islam!

I'm fed up of the apparent attitude that the opposite sexes can't just be friends with one another. If a woman and a man are friends, this is because they get along well and value the other person's advice and company. It doesn't mean that they're secretly in love by default like a number of "scholars" blatantly claim!

The way they are doing this is just stupid and ill-thought.

If they want women and men to stand side by side all up next to each other they have really strange ideas and maybe they should build their own masjid..
