Headscarves on non-Muslims

A friend of mine has asked a question I know I've asked in the past: is it okay for non-Muslims to wear the headscarf in a way reminiscent of the hijab, or is it appropriative? Especially since it would be done not as a show of solidarity with Muslimahs, but as a fashion statement. I've worn pashminas loosely over my hair before to keep my head ( Read more... )

Hey there, I'm the linked poster.

If you're worried about coming off rude or anything don't worry about it! Your comment is precisely the kind of thing I want to know about and engage with. I've got feedback to the effect of "make sure you wear it with a modest outfit" but you're correct that there's a good reason to extend this to behaviours.

I was amused when I was looking through a Vogue or Glamour magazine or something like that and all the women were "stylishly" sporting stuff on their heads! I am not sure how others would feel about non-muslims wearing hijab, but I think if it were to catch on as a "trend" it would greatly reduce islamophobia. It would be nice if a person in hijab could walk around and not be stared at all because of a little piece of material on their heads.

A people will not change their minds until they have first changed their hearts.

Meaning that bigoted people will ignorantly continue to be bigoted, the proliferation of head-coverings and Muslim-like dress will only give the bigoted individual more to hate.

As an Ummah we have to elevate the status of the Muslim in the eyes of the non-Muslim, we have to be more pro-active and less re-active. Only then can we begin to change hearts.
