Challenge/Prompt: crow and tear on valentine's day in japan!
Title: no one in this fic actually knows what valentine's day is
--
"I... do not know the first thing about making chocolate." Tear admitted, finally, with all of the ingredients laid out in front of her on her counter, ready to make something nice out of it, but not having the slightest clue. She knew what pretty chocolate was supposed to look like, wasn't Natalia enough to cook what chocolate wasn't supposed to taste like, but the end thought was still the same-- she was very much out of her element.
There was a call from her apartment's living room. "I don't think he'll care--!" Crow was camping out with her to surprise Kazuha with a visit in the morning. In retrospect, spending the night at another girl's house to kill time was an idiot move, but between the four of them, suspecting anything was even stupider; so it was disregarded. He was busy flipping channels, remarking how cool TV there was-- how oddball it was, and none of it helped Tear's plight in the kitchen. Stir, pour chocolate in the mold, add filling... what filling would he like?
"-- Crow, what flavor do you think Kaito likes?"
"Tear-flavor. Tie yourself up in a Valentine's ribbon and give him chocolate that way."
"You are--" She was furiously stirring melted white chocolate in a bowl-- "Extremely lucky I can't pull myself away from this or I would hit you for that."
He sounded affronted-- "Whaaaat? I didn't mean it that way--well, seriously-- just. Picture it for a second. You dressed up in something cute for a day and handing him the chocolate. He'll like the Tear more than the chocolate."
She carefully poured the filling into the mold. "Are you sure about that? I mean-- it's just... me." She fanned the chocolate until it was hard enough to decorate. Blue and red icing around the edges and a carefully copied white chocolate drawing in the center of his 'signature'. "I don't know the first thing about this holiday except about giving chocolate and I'm pretty sure he doesn't either." It looked as good as she would get it, anything more would probably be overdressing... the extra chocolate left over tasted fine, so she didn't have to worry about him finding it awful.
He invaded the kitchen to try the rest of the extra chocolate for himself. "Hey, I don't know anything about this holiday either, but if Kazuha came up to me out of the blue dressed up nice and handing me candy, I'd probably be more interested in her than the candy. Just saying."
The fonist pondered on it for a moment... if he didn't really care about the holiday, then what Crow said made sense. Chocolate was just tradition. Tear was firmly untraditional, if only because she knew nothing about tradition in the first place. She wrapped the candy gently so it wouldn't break. "I... I guess I do have a dress I've been saving for a date."
"See? There you go. Oh, by the way, I'll be gone in the morning. Nothing personal, it's just bad form to be in another girl's apartment on V-day."
... She would put her palm to her forehead if it wasn't covered in chocolate. "... yes, understood."
--
He already had bags full of gifted chocolate by the time Tear caught up to their meeting spot. She wasn't usually the jealous type... but at the same time, she felt herself getting red in the face for a reason other than being flustered. Suddenly, the wrapped heart-shaped chocolate in her hand seemed like much less in comparison-- no no, stop... comparing. She was hiding behind a thankfully large tree. Why was she comparing? If she continued holding onto that chocolate like that, it would melt. She'd need to go give it to him and--
"This is for me, right?" A hand reached around from the tree and plucked it out of her hands. She squeaked and immediately hid behind the other side of the tree.
"Don't sneak up on me like that!"
"You went all out..." The thief remarked, chuckling brightly. "Can I try a little bit of it now?" He kept looping around the tree to get a good look at her, but she kept moving around in step so he wouldn't see her-- a very juvenile chase.
"S- sure, go for it--"
"Why are you running away?"
"I'm not running away. Away is a place away from here."
"Why are you running from me, then."
"Because you keep circling the tree!"
"So are you--!"
It became an actual chase then, something bystanders couldn't help but gawk at-- until Kaito casually turned around and let Tear bump into him. She immediately backed away-- a cute, puffed black dress with white lining and hair clips that looked like cat ears. She waited for it, the 'haha, oh wow' or the 'so bold, Tear!' type of teasing. Instead he kept casually looking her up and down and finally said-- "...You outdid all the chocolate I got this year."
She brushed her hair out of her eyes, looking away. "... th- then Happy Valentine's."
He draped on her, half to show everyone that had been staring 'look, this catgirl is mine ♥', half out of habit, and added-- "I am not too sure... I think there's a follow up holiday to this. One for the girls. If I dressed up like a catboy, would it be considered a fair trade?"
She immediately covered her face, the mental image already in her head and not leaving-- what's more, she never gave him an answer.
