AU of angst

Juliet typically works late on Thursday nights, just so that she can call it a day early on Fridays. She'd rather go home if she can, or have time to run errands on a weekday afternoon. But on this particular Thursday, she finds herself further ahead than she usually is, probably in no small part due to her new assistant. So, she leaves the lab ( Read more... )

There's two of them, they broke in about an hour before Juliet arrived. David's a damn good fighter, but they had the element of surprise, and double the manpower. He didn't go down easily, but he did go down. He hopes to God Juliet takes her time getting home tonight; it's too unrealistic to wish she just detours and goes to hang out with the girls tonight instead, but it's a vain hope that crosses his mind as he wakes up tied to a chair.

They're so close to solving this latest murder, and his hunch is that one of the local mobsters is their man. It's hard as hell trying to pin anything on organized crime, but he's not one to be intimidated easily; he grew up in that neighborhood, after all, he knows the life. It occurs to Rossi, even through the haze as he slowly opens his eyes, that these men have no intention of keeping him alive. He wouldn't bother sending these men just to rough him up. He's supposed to be the warning sign.

Juliet hears someone coming around the corner, and she presses back against the wall. She knows what Dave's foot fall sounds like, and this isn't it. Getting a good grip, she hopes the element of surprise is on her side, and she swings as soon as she gets a glimpse of the person, hitting him square in the chest.

It's a good, solid hit, and it knocks the wind out of him a little bit, and he bends down to catch his breath, almost stumbling. But he's a big guy, so it doesn't derail him for long. And when he stands up fully again, he's got the gun up and in the air, aimed at her.

"Nice try, sweetheart." He cocks the gun. "Are you his girl?"

She's got nothing up against the gun, so she goes ahead and tosses down the poker, standing up straight, not cowering.

"Well. That depends on who you're asking, I guess. The door was left open. I could be an off duty cop. Could have backup already on the way." She's not blinking at all. Just staring him down.
