I slide into the water of Lake Monona in Madison, WI and slowly swim away from shore. As I dolphin kick below the surface, I come up out of the water to see the first glimmer of light peering out over the lake. I take a deep slow breath and contemplate the day ahead. What an incredible experience. Have you done any triathalons since that first one?

I love the image of that calm waiting befre all that work. This sentence really sums it up:

the gun ripples through the sky, and any calm that the morning held is now 4000 arms of chaos spinning through the water.

I've done shorter distances since then but nothing that long. Someday again hopefully!
