A survey - regarding the use of Roses on Devices

Nov 22, 2008 18:39

One of my household members was told that she might not want to put a Rose on her device as the "Roses" might tke exception to this use of heraldry.

What I'm interested to know is what all of you out there in LJ land think of this - or if it does not matter either way.

Just did a "blazon pattern" search on the SCA Online Armorial site, using "a rose" as the descriptive, and 794 matching entries were found. If the Order of the Rose is not offended by all those other devices, I cant' imagine that they'd be offended by one more, as long as it doesn't conflict with the badge of the Order itself.

Go to the Trimarian Order of Precidence. Search Octavio de Flores. Check out his device. 'Nuff said. (Yes, it has passed.)

This statement was said to a fairly new member - I told her that it was fine to have a rose - it would be a rare rose who "might" be offended.

Good evening, Your Grace. mysryael asked me to come look at this issue and weigh in accordingly. While I can't speak on whether any Ladies of the Rose would take exception to a rose being used on a non-LotR device, I can most assuredly tell you that they'd have no leg to stand on if they did. The protected regalia for the Ladies of the Rose is a wreath of roses, not a single rose, and as julifox has pointed out, there are plenty of roses out there. In fact, there are 2,145 pieces of registered armory with at least one rose on them, so your friend would have company best described as Legion.

Thank you for giving me the hard statistical data to back up my thought that - Yes it's not only ok to have a Rose on your device. Any Rose who "might" become offended will have 2145 other reasons to already be offended.

The joke here being that I wear a rose proudly as a member of the Legionnaires of Courtesy. It is a heraldic gold rose on a blue and white
ribbon given by the hand of the Queen of Caid.

It gives one the recognition of being an exemplary model of courtesy
and a responsibility to act as Her Majesty's ambassador of courtesy
to all and sundry who you come in contact with.

I earned mine by, well to be honest, I'm not sure just exactly what
I did to earn mine - But - I will continue to try and live up to what
Queen Kolfinna saw in me.

I love the idea of a Courtesy token from the Queen - I have decided we need to do more of that in Trimaris.

I'm a Rose and I'm fine when people use Rose heraldry - Then again as long as they don't pee in my canoe - I could give a rat's derriere
