Do you believe in Elementals?

My beta reader for The Liminal Key, my fantasy romance novel, asked me this question ( Read more... )

I don't believe in any such things -- God, demons, sprites, ghosts, etc. I'm not *ANTI* such beliefs -- my wife believes in ghosts as well as God -- but I haven't seen any evidence to convince me that any such things exist.

I understand, Ryk. People get into such disagreements over religion. Not to reduce it to taste but I would never convince or force someone to like lobster if they preferred steak or even have the subject come up at dinner. I used to like political discourse but it's become so vitriolic I avoid it and it's not because I don't have a strong opinion. The fact that these days politics even arises out of a discussion on religion is absurd too. A have dinner once a week with a friend I've forbidden to discuss politics because I refuse to budge on my liberal views. It shouldn't matter what I think or whether I agree with him or not. *sigh ( ... )

I'm with you Barbara. I'd need convincing evidence to believe there are aliens or that people have been abducted. But if aliens are super intelligent they would be studying us like we were mere sub order animals or if they weren't mammals as a less intelligent species.

Sometimes my software does wacky things it's not supposed to do that drive me crazy, like it's possessed by sprites.

I've gotten that haunted vibe feeling too and I usually fail those Psychic tests horribly. Not only do I never guess the card I almost always get the wrong answer. I do think there are people who are far more intuitive than I am to the point of being or appearing to be Psychic.

Interesting! When I think "elementals," I think of fantasy creatures having to do with Earth, Air, Fire and Water.

But no, I don't/haven't.

It is interesting. I think of my Elves in the modern way via LOTR and some movies. i.e. as solid living breathing beings in my fiction. So I was surprised by my beta reader's question. I don't think of my Elves and Fairies as ephemeral. Or for that matter having anything to do with the elements. As a matter of fact mine live a lot longer than humans. Now that I think of it I should give them a myth of elemental beings.

These are my favorite sorts of stories; elementals, fantasy creatures, etc, but I'm more like I wish they existed and imagining the sort of world this would be if they did exist, more than thinking they do.

I don't recall ever reading a story about elementals. I'd like to market my fantasy romance as a science fiction romance but readers would imagine rocket ships and romance instead of alternate universe with human-sized Elves.

I'm not sure I'd like it if Elementals were real. They'd be small and ephemeral and fantasy-like and mice already scare me>;o(
