I heard an astronomer on ABC Radio early yesterday. He said that the near-horizon effect you talked about is a manifestation of scalability near the horizon, against other objects. When high in the sky, there is no such comparison. The perception of additional size from the supermoon phenomenon is only marginal comparative to the near-horizon effect. Not that I'd trot out expert opinion or anything!
