I participated in this study after my bike accident a year and a half ago. My accident, it seems, was more typical of Toronto accidents than of Vancouver ones - only 3/150 Vancouver cyclists ran afoul of a train/streetcar track, compared to 45/150 in Toronto. Dr. Friedman, who sees the consequences of bike accidents in his emergency room, said his advice for cyclists is to be particularly wary of streetcar tracks - which tend to catch bike tires and can be extremely slippery when wet - and cross them at acute angles.

Amusingly, he suggests crossing tracks at every single angle save the most safe one.

Oh, god, I missed that. Sheee.

Yeah, after my accident I had tons of people say, "yeah, you gotta look out for those tracks!" Yeah, I think I figured that out after (hell, *during*) flying over my handlebars.

During the study, the interviewer asked me if I thought my accident was avoidable. I said that I probably wouldn't have fallen if there had been a sign like this one near the tracks.
