It turns out that the parking space bidding war was less competitive than I'd expected: dude has multiple cars in need of homes. One will live in my spot for the next year. Hooray for free money!

Bluh. I have a hard enough time imagining having one car in a major city, let alone multiple. But yay for free money for you! Profiting off other people's bad ideas/planning/etc. is a wonderfully lucrative field. :D

Yeah, I have trouble relating to this as well (and you know where I live! Necessities within walking distance, gobs of transit, and co-op cars as far as the eye can see!), but I'm happy to just take the cash. I think he's a collector. Makes my hobbies look both cheap and worthwhile by comparison.

Dude, you're from Nepean. You totally get the car culture. Put yourself in the mind of someone from Nepean who moved to the city, perhaps with young kids, and who wants to bring their life with them: weekend shopping expedition at Costco, ease of going to the pediatrician without having their kids run away on public transit (or complain the whole way on the bus and embarrass the parents), monthly road trip to see the grandparents who live in a retirement home in Squamish, etc. The only way to live somewhere new is to change your life to be the life that is easily livable there. You live in the city, and have a city-friendly life. I think this guy is living in the city, but has a surburban life -- as do most people I've met who live in North American cities.

It seems I left out a relevant detail: dude has **four** cars. Dude is at most two adults. I don't believe there are any children in the equation, but I could be wrong. But if there are children involved, I submit that the best way for dude to replicate his suburban life would be to get a house (even a townhouse) out in the suburbs, rather than a condo.

(Also, the ad in the lobby said "Bob bought another beauty and needs a home for it" - probably not a minivan or SUV.)

Is "dude" one person? It's possible he's multiple people, in which case having multiple cars makes more sense.

I think you should charge more. Call it a "privacy surcharge".

Often when I go looking for a house they will try to sell to me on having a parking spot. At first it seemed like a waste of my buying power and square footage, especially as if I ever get a car, I can park it on the street for $120/year, but after a while I realised I could probably rent it out for a significant chunk of change, being close to businesses with little parking. Free money is definitely a good thing.
