eh so what else is new. iran and israel have had a back and forth for ages. particularly in the last few years this has been the case. in all fairness iraq started it by openly hosting a "convention" type event for palestinian terrorists where they exchanged methods, training, and techniques for murdering israelis. but particularly since the nuclear issue became more immediate Iran has been threatening Israel quite overtly, and Israel has been talking about bombing reactors...this business is definitely an escalation of the rhetoric but it is not a terribly severe one. previous saber rattling by Iran has insinuated as much, this is just the first time I have heard it stated outright in such a direct manner in such a public forum.
It probably is nothing more than saber rattling. The Iranians are not stupid. They know if that if they fire nukes at any Western state or any ally of a Western state it will create a M.A.D. situation. I do not think the Iranians will condemn their own people to death at the expense of killing a few million Jews...not to mention destroying the 3rd most holy site in Islam in the process.
I dont think its the people per se that they are worried about...its the power they derive from ruling over their country. the people to rule over are part and parcel of that. a nuclear retaliation would wipe out everything they have built. for that matter, this clear attempt at political maneuvering so that they get enough clout to play with the big boys would not work if Israel didnt exist. I'm quite certain that when there is peace in the middle east and the dust all settles, the leaders of these countries will all tell israel "thanks for being our straw man and helping us out, however involuntarily you did so. Its terribly sad you cant fill that role anymore but we'll find something else, and you deserve a treat for being there for us for so long. here, have some free oil."
