Introduction to: Masahiko Kondo (Matchy) / 近藤真彦 (マッチ) ***Updated constantly***

Dec 12, 2009 09:22

Hi! I've forgotten my blog and I don't want to let it die, that's why I wanna start the big posting with the introduction to one of my most liked Japanese idols: Masahiko Kondo (近藤真彦), a.k.a. "Matchy" (マッチ). He's one of the most important idols of the 80's along with Akina Nakamori, Seiko Matsuda, Toshihiko Tahara, etc., His songs go from very powerful and catchy songs to beautiful ballads.
He's part of the Johnny's Jimusho since his debut and actually he's one of the enterprise's top heads.

The King is here!

NOTE: I wrote same post on AznOngaku, will conserve format and edit some parts.

Masahiko Kondo's story is relatively long ( I almost know all about him LOL), and I'll try to resume it the most as I can.

***THE BASICS***
OK. Matchy, as I'll refer about him from now on, was one of the biggest 80's icons. He was born on July 19th, 1964 at Yokohama port, part of Kanagawa prefecture. He's actor, singer and racing cars pilot and owner of a racing car company. His debut was on 1979 (OMG yeah! 30 yrs ago!) in a group called "Tanokin Trio" comprised by Toshihiko Tahara "Toshi-chan", Yoshio Nomura "Nocchan" and Masahiko Kondo "Matchy" ("Tanokin" is compound by taking members' 2nd name's 1st syllable but Matchy's: "Ta": Tahara, "No": Nomura "Kin":Kondo, as "Kin" is the other reading for that kanji) and appeared in a scholar dorama called "3-nen B-gumi Kinpachi Sensei". After then, they continued with their careers on their own, with Toshi-chan being the 1st one on his solo debut. Next was Matchy's debut, on 1980, with the single "Sneaker Blues" from movie of same name.

Although they participated together in more movies, "Highteen Boogie" and "Arashi wo yobu otoko" (The man who calls storms), Matchy had the main role.

Matchy-Toshi-Nocchan
Toshi and Matchy went on with their solo singer careers, but in my opinion Matchy was more popular. Since the beginning his attitude was very fresh and nice. His greatest hit is "Gingiragin ni sarigenaku", released on September 30th, 1981, hitting Oricon #1 and made him win a lot of awards. One of that was the "Best debutee award" of the Japan Record Award (Nihon Record Taisho / 日本レコード大賞)

Thereafter, his career went on succesfully and continued doing more movies, appeared in the most important music TV Programs and performed on Kouhaku Utagassen from 1981 until 1988 and in 1996.

On 1987 he won Nihon Record Taisho (an annual award given to the best album, best song and best debutee, just like grammy's) with single "Orokamono".

Respect of his amorous life, the most recognized episode was when he dated the super popular (and my other most loved idol) Akina Nakamori (I think it's like his stigma >< ). They started dating after starring 1985 movie "Ai·Tabidachi" (Love·Departure) and they were apparently happy, but the press were not forgiving with them and had some problems, they had a rocky relationship and finally got separated on 1989. This is a very sad story so I'll avoid it lol. It's also known that he dated famous HK idol Anita Mui in the late 80's, they even appeared together on HK TV singing "Kizuna".

Screencap from movie "Ai·tabidachi"

Matchy as a racer
How the hell did Matchy manage to be a famous singer and at the same time, to have a racing career? As far as I know, because he was a super idol, he wasn't allowed to drive on public, so, his manager took him to a racing circuit and there he started with one of his passions, and combined his singing career with racing cars D:
On 1998, he retired of singing and continued full time with car races, participating in national competitions and even on "Le Mans 24 hours" race with decent results. He created later his own racing company called "KONDO racing" with the purpose to create high-quality racing cars with 100% japanese parts.

Most of his singles were really successful. For example, as stated before, after super famous "Sneaker Blues", came his super duper mega boom "Gingiragin ni sarigenaku", it's one of the songs that were released to stay on people's heart forever. On recent TV program MUSIC STATION, occupied #66 as one of Japan's all-time most important songs.

Gingiragin ni sarigenaku, on NHK Kouhaku Utagassen, 1981

This is a more "recent" version. We can see Matchy's more mature and clean voice, and with a better vocal technique. (I'd say that his actual style started to become more clear since ~1986 and his definitive vocal technique was established since 1989)
To be honest, this was the video that charmed me and guided me to becoming his fan LOL XDDDDDD

Highteen Boogie, his 7th single, also one of Matchy's hits. Featured on movie from same name.

After, the last Tanokin trio movie was released, called "Arashi wo yobu otoko" (The man who calls storms), remake of a movie with same name of the 60's, about some guy who wants to be a drummer but his mother doesn't want to. The song of this movie is "Tameiki Rock-a-billy" (Sigh of a Rock-a-billy). This was in 1983

Kejimenasai. This is my 2nd favourite Matchy song ♥ For me, this song was THE summer single of 1984. With this song Matchy participated on Kouhaku Utagassen of same year.

Orokamono. (Fool). It's one of Matchy's most important songs. It was released the 1st of January, 1987 and it remained popular all year making him the winner of that year's Nihon Record Taisho! (Considering that festival is held on December 31st!!!!). It's a song that he always performed with feeling even making him almost cry. Curiously at the same time Akina sang "Nanpasen" (Wrecked Ship) which is also a heartbreaking ballad.

Yuuyake no uta. (Song of Sunset). It's a very beautiful ballad, and imo, "underrated", because it didn't reach #1 oricon or best ten, but it's a very well know song of him.

Andalucia ni akogarete. (Longing for Andalucia) The same song everyone at Johnny's Jimusho cover. As a curious fact, this is also a cover, original by Masatoshi Mashima, but Matchy made it famous LOL

Kita Machikado. (North Corner) My super favourite Matchy song of all universe!!! ♥ It wasn't that famous but I put it here so you know it.

The super lovely and godly Midnight Shuffle *0* It was the opening for a Dorama called "Silver Wolf Files" on 1996. It was a real big hit that year, and was the song that let Matchy perform again at Kouhaku after 8 years of absence from TV.

Then, after 1998, he didn't release any singles or CD's because he went full time on his racing career, and he was rarely seen on TV, either as racer or racing comentarist, and even more rarely as guest on variety TV programs.
On 2006, in order to celebrate his 25th anniversary since his debut, he decided to come back to musical stage, releasing a singles compilation, called マッチ箱 (Matchy box) ~25th Anniversary Complete Singles Edition~, containing every single released by him, remastered with a DVD with different versions of like 4 songs

The Matches box XD

Yeah LOL It resemples a matches box, because in japanese, when you pronounce "matchy" that means "matches" XD and If you look closely, getting all CD's together you can see the image of matches o,oU Limited edition has 43CD + DVD. So, whoever gives to me this box will have my love forever *o* It only costs like 400USdlls

But I think it's worth the price tot
After that come "Chousensha" (Challenger) and "Shanghai bojou/Jounetsu namida" (Longing Shanghai/passionate tears) which sound a little more slower, execpting "Jounetsu Namida" which sounds a little like jazz.

"Mezamero! Yasei". (Wake up! Wild) This was an ending song for anime series Naruto Shippuuden, and he sings with a Johnny unit called "Question?". The single includes a "Midnight shuffle" new mix.

♫ Mezamero yaseeeeei ♪

After then, comes "BANKA ~otokotachi no banka~" which in my appreciation I found it very greek-middle european styled song. (In fact ppl say it's cover from an european song I can't remember atm).

-MOTTO- was released on 2009 which represents his will to continue singing and to keep getting to his fans who have always supported him. This track was performed on Johnny's Countdown 2010

I hope he celebrates his 30th anniversary with lots of singles and programs and concerts. I want him to participate again on NHK Kouhaku Utagassen 2010 ;O;

Tribute Album
As a good Japanese idol, how wouldn't he have a tribute album? This one was released also on 2006 with his 25th anniversary celebration. This is a cover album.

In my opinion, I don't like it that much, I only liked Kejimenasai, and Midnight Shuffle, which sounds very nice.
That's all about his discography. I didn't include TV programs, doramas, movies, etc because I will never end writing LOL (I spent all day translating my original post T_T), so I hope you liked this and you can start knowing him and loving him yay :D XDDDDD
