Crimson Peak

In the aftermath of a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds - and remembers.

Being the sad old Goth that I am this was right up my street. Victoriana, shrieking ghosts, doe-eyed damsels wandering down dark corridors with a candle, Tom Hiddleston getting his arse out it was all here with knobs on! And on the whole I really liked it.

For a start it looked GORGEOUS. From the sumptuous costumes (I totally want all of Jessica Chastains wardrobe btw, that red dress was beautiful) to the crumbling house, every detail has been designed to within an inch of its life. (Much like The Woman in Black I would totally live in that house, shrieking ghosts or not). And I haven't seen a film for a while where you could actually feel the cold, or feel the oozing red mud on the moor and the dust in the house.

Performances were good. Mia Whatsername was the only slightly duff note with her doe-eyes and puffy dresses. Tom Hiddleston continues his campaign to single handedly destroy me. No man should look that good being stabbed in the face. No man should be able to rock the Victoriana like that. DAMN HIM! But special mention must go to Jessica Chastain who elevates bat-shit crazy to a new level. She was just glorious! And hello again Turtle Boy! :oD

But yet again it was slightly too long at 2 hours. Maybe too much time on the romance and not enough on the ghosts, but I know it was a love story first and a ghost story second and I'm sure things will even out on a second watch. But the creepyness and story kept my attention.

Maybe not up there with Pans Labyrinth but better than Pacific Rim.
