Star Wars - The Force Awakens

Three decades after the defeat of the Galactic Empire, a new threat arises. The First Order attempts to rule the galaxy and only a rag-tag group of heroes can stop them, along with the help of the Resistance.

OK, I was never a HUGE Star Wars fan.....but holy shit, what a film!! Obviously relying somewhat on the good feelings towards the original three, Star Wars The Force Awakens also stands out as a stunning masterpiece of action filmmaking in its own right.

JJ Abrams is a director who gets it, he knows what made the first three work (the original 3, not the jumped up firework display of a toy commercial CGI nighmares) A boo-hiss bad guy, stormtroopers kicking hell out of everything, spaceships have massive fuck off lazers-pew-peww space battles, and funny droids beeping at each other. We dont need endless scenes of people in 100% CGI talking about tax. (Can we pretend those films didn't happen? Please?)

Storywise it is almost a remake of A New Hope (lonely teen on a planet wanting to leave to see the galaxy, a mysterious message hidden in a droid, an evil black clad baddie taking over the world) but using every modern film technique to blast this into the 21st century. The CGI is impeccable, but its the use of practical sets and effects which give the action a weight and realism setting things in the real world and not an artifical green screen studio.

Performances are good even though Rey comes across as a younger Keira Knightly, all gangly legs and teeth and a slightly annoying 'what ho!' air about her. And god bless Harrison Ford, the moody old bastard! Craggy and stubbly but still with that Han-ness which is bringing out all my old feels. I refuse to belive he is dead, they CANNOT do that to Han! *sobs uncontrollably* And special mention to Domhnall Gleeson as General Hux, a walking talking cowardly self-important weedy sneer of a man. I think I love him! :oD

An almost flawless film with action set pieces which are truely breathtaking, sets and art design which will take several views to truely appreciate and that theme tune. I am in geek heaven :)
