all fans of uber-hip scene queen M.I.A., please read THIS.

in case you missed it, M.I.A. videos, her album art, and most of her interviews are chock full of tamil tiger propaganda. in our super-hip underground indie world, everyone is absolutely apeshit into this third world ghetto mystique right now and its pretty infuriating to me because alot of ( Read more... )

ahahahahahaha, GO TAMIL TIGERS GO

What a stupid fucking cunt. It's like, if you've even HEARD of the Tamil Tigers I can't even think of a way that it's possible not to know that they're the most awful people ever. Maybe she's getting them mixed up with Tiger Army?

the only honest way to wage revolution is with ideas. waging a revolution with violence only begets more pain and suffering, which defeats the entire point of (for me at least) revolution in the first place. the intellectuals will justify the violence and rape using the "means to an end" argument, but try explaining that to the children of someone killed by one of your bombs or to the wife of a guy that is a vegetable because he was shot during a gun battle with an officer of the state. the fact of the matter is, whoever uses violence as a means will have a lot to answer for at their end- and i don't mean in some "heaven" or "hell" context (though i don't rule anything out)- i just mean that you'll have to live with the terrible things you've done, and when the slogans and excitement wear down, if you are a person with any kind of conscience, you'll spend the rest of your days realizing that you were no better than those you fought against ( ... )

yes. as usual, jonathan, you know exactly what i'm talking about.

regardless of where M.I.A. stands now, her first album has tamil tiger propaganda in it. whether she still supports them now is something i obviousyl can't verify (and i truly doubt that she advocates violence), but i have her first album and i'm looking at it now and it has graffiti art of m-16s, molotov cocktails, soldiers, tanks, bombs, and a tiger, all within the color scheme readily used by the tamil tigers. REVOLUTION sells. ITS BULLSHIT.

in my opinion, the only band whose political bents are not hypocritical and honest (while still being prominent in their lyrics and lifestyle) are THE EX. as much political stuff as they say, they are true old school anarchists who believe that people don't need governments to take care of them and that people need to work together in harmony to get things done and to take care of themselves and do things for themselves and THAT is a mindset that i will ALWAYS agree with.

that's really weird because yesterday in Interational Relations my teacher was telling us about this 10-page paper we were going to write and I was thinking that I would write about the Tamil Tigers and the conflict in Sri Lanka because I bet everyone else is going to do South Korea or China or some Middle Eastern country...I only read the first 3 sentences of your post btw.

"The decoratively arrayed, pastel-washed tigers, soldiers, guns, armored vehicles, and fleeing civilians that bedeck her album are images, not propaganda-the same stuff that got her nominated for an Alternative Turner Prize in 2001. They're now assumed to be incendiary because, unlike art buyers, rock and roll fans are assumed to be stupid."

hahahha, thank god for assumptions.

christgau can shove it. the difference between images and propaganda are the ideas behind what they are supposed to represent, and the last time i checked, the lines are pretty obvious in regards to that.

FUCK M.I.A.

okay, im gonna respond. there is a lot more to like about m.i.a. than her being hot. and there is a lot more to dialogue than saying "fuck m.i.a". i dont claim to know everything about everything, but i will try to present a counter argument to your post. oh and i want to make it clear from the get go that i am not writing this to defend terrorist actions, nor am i writing it because i worship m.i.a. and think nothing she could ever do would make me disagree with her ( ... )

3. M.I.A.'s first album is loaded with images of war, revolution, guns, soldiers, etc. now lets add her story+ her dad's story + plus the fact that she name drops the P.L.O. in her "sunflowers" songs, which incidentally (i just found out) her father's MILITANT tamil tiger group were connected with because they were supposed to be TRAINED by them in guerilla warfare! READ IT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eelam_Revolutionary_Organisation_of_Students I'M SORRY, but if this isn't the most blatant example of not only using revolution to sell your albums, but flat out calling attention to it in the most obvious way ("like PLO, i don't surrender!"), then i don't know what is. THIS IS USING REVOLVUTION AS PART OF YOUR IMAGE TO SELL RECORDS. that is bullshit. i cannot and will not ever agree to it. it might have been cool to me when i liked rage against the machine when i was 14 and didn't know any better about che guevara, but that shit ( ... )

5. violence does not solve anything, it creates problems. however it is undeniable that pretty much the entire history of the world can unfortunately be seen by the violence that one group inflicts upon another. this will never end, revolutions will never cease to be, and people who don't want to be involved will always got caught up and innocent lives will always die as a result of people FIGHTING for what THEY (and only they) believe is the right thing. it is an endless and brutal cycle that will never end. i hate it all and that is why i don't ever want to have ANYTHING to do with politics ever ( ... )
