me and my family were "legal immigrants" whenever we came to live in the united states in late 1989, right after the fall of the USSR, and we had to pay taxes into the hungarian system initially for about 2 or 3 years, which was kind of ridiculous because we couldn't get ANY benefits from the hungarian government because we weren't technically living on their land, even though they were getting our tax money. we had to start paying into the american tax system in about 92 or 93 and this was WAY before we became full legal US citizens, which didn't happen until late 2001...
