Normally, when a command came from Gaara in the middle of the night, Temari was right on the ball, up and ready to go in minutes at most, but usually seconds.

Normally, her classmate who died during the last year of school in a freak accident wasn't walking the streets, head half blow off and mewling pathetically for brains.

Never-the-less, as normal, she got dressed, shouldered her fan, and made her way to the Kazekage's office, albeit in a much slower fashion. In the past week or so, she could probably count the hours she'd slept on her hands alone. Unfortunately, being a ninja did not mean she had yet found a cure for sleep deprivation. She was still working on that one.

Arriving at the door having successfully dodged a few of the remaining undead, she wrapped lightly on it, pushing slightly to test if it was open.

"..Gaara?"

Having recognized the light knock and voice, Gaara didn't bother to hide the half an orange he had left. He didn't even look up. "Sit, Temari."

His fruit was good. He planned to finish it before starting any discussions. And with only his siblings coming he could finish it. Gaara didn't mind if they saw him doing things he considered a weakness. Enjoying anything as much as he did his oranges was vary much a weakness. Mm.. orange.

He savored another section of citrus perfection. Only someone who knew him well would notice the change in expression, but it was there.

Another segment gone; only a few left. He finished them off one at a time, enjoying them while keeping an eye on his sister. Once the last piece was gone he folded his hands together on his desk and gave Temari all his attention. "What is the status of our situation?"

Temari sat.

And waited.

And yawned widely.

And really, really wanted to throw that goddamned orange out the window, but she'd fought this long to keep her life and she wasn't going to tempt fate now.

He could, at the very least, offer her some. Jerk.

When-finally-Gaara turned his full attention back to her, she had every intention of telling him off, but what came out instead was a full report.

"There's nothing near the hordes that we first saw, although there are a still a few rogue bands of enemies wandering around. They're not exactly what you'd call stealthy, though, so it's just a matter of waiting for someone to call in the report and dispatching a squad over there with a flamethrower or two..."

Gaara nodded and let his eyes wander down toward his orange stash. He would like another, but then he would feel obligated to share. The Kazekage never shared oranges. It. Just. Didn't. Happen.

He looked around the room for a solution and found it in the form of a microfreezer. Ice cream. Standing, he walked silently around his desk and over to the softly humming machine recessed into the wall. There were definite perks to ruling over a village, and this was definitely on the list. Opening the expertly hidden door, he pulled out the orange sherbert and paused to consider another idea.

Setting the sherbert back in for a moment, he pulled out several bottles and reached for two glasses. It wasn't often that he drank, but it had been a long two weeks. Due to an uncharacteristic streak of charity, he was going to mix a drink for his sister as well. Death In a Glass seemed a fitting one for the situation ( ... )

When Temari noticed that Gaara wasn't about to get up and serve her, she nearly breathed a sigh of relief, but resisted, if only not to let on quite how relieved she was ( ... )

Sherbert, Gaara decided in his usual direct way, should taste more as it was labeled. The real things were much better.

He watched his sister as he continued to eat the disappointing treat despite its.. disappointing taste. She didn't seem to mind the flavor. He could give the other four tubs to her, then. Good. Nothing would go to waste and room would be cleared for something new. He'd seen orange creme bars, maybe he'd try those next.

The question she asked nearly went unheard as Gaara was busy staring at nothing. It had been another long day; he was sure she'd understand. Though it looked like she'd had several long days herself and wouldn't notice his slightly slower response.

Frowning slightly, Gaara sipped from his glass to give himself more time before answering. "No. There are not even leads to follow beyond trails to now empty graves."
