[She frowned as she began the long story.]

So Kaoru-san sent me a letter telling me that there was this guy named Enishi, and he wanted to make you suffer because of what happened to Tomoe-san. Ya told me that already, so yeah. So, Kaoru-san asked for help. She told me to get Tomoe-san's diary from the temple where she was buried in Kyoto. So of course, Aoshi-sama and I raced to the temple to get it, and we went to Tokyo.

[Here, her eyes darkened with memory.]

But when we got there . . . we met Yahiko at the bridge, and . . . he said that Kaoru-san was dead. I couldn't believe it . . .

[A brief pause as her mouth turned downwards in a frown.]

You weren't around, and Yahiko said it was because you were in that village where the "fallen" lived . . . and you weren't getting up.

So Yahiko and I went there, and I was telling you that we had to avenge Kaoru-san! But ya wouldn't listen . . .

Then I saw Aoshi-sama and Megumi-san in the village . . .

[The color drained completely out of his face at her words, his eyes hollowing out as the image of Kaoru's body pinned to the wall of the dojo by Enishi's watou blazed in the back of his mind.]

[Not a dream... not a trick by the City...]

[Just as he had feared...]

[His fists went to a white-knuckle grip against the counter top, lowering his head slightly.]

[But no... he had to hear the rest of what she had to say. He had to hear it all before he truly reacted...]

Don't faint on me, or stop listening. Ya have to listen, or I'm punching you. Ya have to listen because you've got to help Kaoru-san!

[She gave him a knock on the arm for emphasis, though she did it lightly--he looked as if he was about to break.]

Anyway . . . Aoshi-sama and Megumi-san were fighting. They were making a fuss, 'cause Aoshi-sama was telling Megumi-san that . . . that he wanted to open Kaoru-san's body. Because he wasn't sure that Kaoru-san was dead, and he wanted to be sure. That's what being an onmitsu's about, right? Facts. Megumi-san was really angry, because it was like he was doubting her . . . I didn't get it much because they were really fighting, but finally, we went to unearth Kaoru-san's grave.

I saw her when Aoshi-sama opened the coffin, and she looked so . . . quiet . . . and . . .

Anyway, finally, after Megumi-san and Aoshi-sama fought some more, Aoshi-sama cut into her body, and . . . there were wires!

It was a doll!

Himura, Kaoru-san was alive!

[He didn't react to the light tap on his arm. He was, indeed, barely holding himself back from shattering to the point that it was almost physically visible with how stiffly he was holding himself, his arms actually shuddering now and then with concentration.]

[He had to internally berate himself. Keep listening. Keep listening. Keep listening...]

[He felt sick, hearing the talk of unearthing her grave... they... they didn't...]

[They...]

[His eyes snapped open, and he stared blankly down at the counter top, his frame remaining tense, unable to move yet.]

[Instead everything that had been eating away at him for the last six months seemed to just... explode into barely contained rage.]

[He stood up quickly, sending the stool over backwards--so much for worrying about buckling knees]

[He stood there and simply seethed for a long, long moment.]

[Ok... a bit longer than a moment...]

[He kept his eyes closed, hands fisted at his sides, jaw set and his breath hissing through teeth that were... for all intents and purposes bared.]

[Nope. This one isn't mentally unstable at all...]

[Finally, he does calm down, leaning forward against the counter top again--pretty much in the same position he was in whens he entered--only radiating enraged ki.]

[Misao stared at him, shuddering at that ki before continuing.]

So you fought off that whale guy, then you and Yahiko ended up in the clinic. Ya slept for a long time while we were makin' preparations to go to Enishi's island base that that cop and Aoshi-sama found out about. Sanosuke came back, 'cause that roosterhead went away for a while.

So we went there, and ya told us to lend you our strength, so we all did! I was the first, 'cause I blasted the water mines out of the way!

[She preened at this, puffing her chest out and looking proud of herself.]So then, we got there, and ya yelled for Enishi to come down and to bring Kaoru-san along. But then, Enishi's second or something from China came with his bodyguards because he was being told by Enishi to go away, and his four bodyguards fought one on one with Saitou, Sano, Yahiko, and Aoshi-sama. Of course, we all won ( ... )

[He continued to stand, listening, the anger fading back but still there under the surface.]

[Enishi kidnapped her...]

[He heard what Misao was saying, but a lot of it didn't register... Only that Kaoru was alive. She was safe. He didn't fail...]

[And a slight tremor when through his limbs again in the wake of his anger as the relief he should have felt in the first place washed in on him.]

[Damn he wished that stool wasn't turned over now... because his knees were, indeed, shaking.]

So like . . . the guy who was Enishi's second in Shanghai was still there after we'd beaten him and all his bodyguards, and he had a gun! He was pointing it at you, and he shot your shoulder, and we all freaked out!

We were gonna rush there, but then, Kaoru-san stood between you and the guy who was gonna shoot you!

[Misao paused.]

Then, you won't believe it . . . Enishi saved her!

He punched the guy to stop him from shooting, and he was almost gonna kill him, but then you stopped Enishi from killing the guy. You said that he'd lose Tomoe-san's smile forever if he added to his sins.

Then ya thanked him for saving Kaoru-san . . .

And he said that the one he really wanted to save most was . . .

[At this, Misao trailed off again, thinking of what happened.]Anyway, he got arrested, and Kaoru-san gave him Tomoe-san's diary so he'd know the truth ( ... )

Enishi...

[His legs shook again.]

[That stool... was really wanted at the moment...]

[He let out a small, almost relieved laugh that continued for a moment, and opted to sink down to his knees behind the counter before they just gave out on him, hands still gripping the ledge.]

[He continued to half-heartedly laugh, feeling tears of relief gather in his eyes.]

[It was the first time in longer than he could remember that that heavy weight over Kaoru's safety had been lifted off of his shoulders.]

[His response kind of freaked the tiny ninja out, but she knew Himura must've been undergoing a lot of stress. So she knelt beside him and patted his shoulder.]

[He managed a smile--not quite a full true smile as there was still just too much going on in his mind... but a smile nonetheless.]

[He rested his forehead against the back of the counter, the standing tears finally slipping down his face.]

[He gave his head a minute shake.]

He has been terrified... of what was coming... what he saw...

[He shook his head again.]

A doll... Youko-san was right... Mou takku he is never doubting the women around him ever again...

[He let his hands slip off the counter before sitting back off of his knees and onto the floor, one hand moving to shield his eyes from her.]

[Misao let him cry. She also hid her crying when she thought Kaoru-san died. There are just some things ya gotta do in private.]

[Nodding, she stepped back, giving him another clap on the back.]

Yeah. Now ya get to breathe properly, right? It's gonna be fine.
