This unworthy one came across Aoshi as Yumi-dono was leading he and Sano to Shishio. He was not among the Juppongatana for us to face before Shishio. But he recognized Aoshi's ki, and could not go further. He had promised to bring Aoshi back to you, and if he continued on then he could lose that chance...
This unworthy one fought him then, and if he had simply wanted to defeat him, he could have. But that would not bring him back... and so he was forced to drag the fight out, allowing himself to be injured in order to throw Aoshi off balance enough that his words would ring through to him in the the end...
He came a mere hair's breadth from dying under Aoshi's attacks twice, the arteries of his neck nearly severed--but as you know he survived and brought Aoshi back with him...
