Stereotyping makes me sick.

Discrimination and defamation against Italian Americans is really, really bad in this country, and it's not even overt discrimination but sneaky stereotyping. For example, a bunch of idiot alumni of my undergrad school started an association called the "Emerson mafia." I would be more offended at cultural appropriation than racism. Everyone wants to be a gangster, okay, I get that. And growl if you must, but I liked the Sopranos.

But Emerson? Emerson and mafia go together like hubcaps and jellyfish.

I liked the Sopranos too. The writers did a great job with the characters, the acting was phenomenal, and there was a lot of subtext of struggling with being an Italian-American, being a living stereotype, etc.

Yes, I agree. I saw a lot of little things that rang true in my family, too. Not the crime stuff! The clothes, the slang terms, lots of little things that made me feel comfortable somehow.

t was the first show that I really related to on a personal level, other than That 70's Show!

sometimes, i wonder if the rest of this country is ever gonna get over some of these prejudices against us. it's like we're the last group it's considered acceptable to disrespect. just ask anyone who ever went to a columbus day parade. :\

it can be seriously infuriating to see the ivory tower bend over backward to kiss every other ethnicity's asses, then turn around and tell us that we're overreacting. it's just as offensive that so many places in the private sector offer so many accomodations and special cultural products (tv programming, long-distance phone packages, music, every customer-service phone menu translated into spanish, etc.) for latinos*; yet if we asked for some representation or accomodation for our italian culture anywhere, they'd just look at us like we're nuts ( ... )
