Also, I don't remember your legs being grotesquely hairy, so feel free to wear shorts on casual occasions. But no dress socks with shorts for the love of all that is holy.

As a general rule, you're right. Adult males generally should avoid wearing shorts. However, in America, the short isn't as taboo as in Europe where being an adult actually means comporting with a certain understanding of class that often clashes with comfort.
