Day 46: A Tirade

I’m a big believer in the idea that when it comes to art, each movement is a response to the previous one.  The films in the late 1960’s and 1970’s and the auteur style were a response to the studio system in Hollywood.  Disco was a response to 1960’s rock, and punk’s unpolished rawness a reaction to over-produced disco, and hair metal’s style over ( Read more... )

And I don't enjoy it in an ironic way. I've seen the show maybe twice and I loved every second of it because I love watching the suffering of those I despise. There's one about an Italian guy hitting on a bunch of girls in a house who all apparently have to wear bikinis all the time. I like watching dumb girls falling for an accent. What can I say, while you have nothing but hope in humanity the only thing that reaffirms my faith is the Fight Club sensibility that marketed the suffering of idiots to other idiots who suffer with them out of empathy while not realizing that it's probably all just one huge joke to a few very intelligent, very rich, cynical, witty, probably gay men.

I like the idea of it. Because I hate most people. Because I'm an asshole.

the sad thing is that it's the people who get pleasure watching the odyssey of personal and spiritual failings of reality show contestants (is that the right word?) who are the majority keeping those shows on the air, not the "it's so bad it's good" crowd ( ... )

What's sad to me is that the few good shows on TV are few and far between (not to mention they're hard to find at any given time). Supernatural is on the fucking WB, and SciFi isn't even offered as basic cable in my area so I can't watch Battlestar. Instead, I'm inundated with spin-offs of spin-offs of a spin off.

I'm almost positive I won't be getting cable at the next place I move to. I'd much rather be forced to actively find and download the shows I'm dedicated to watching.

Also, I think one of the problems is the strike. Reality TV doesn't have "writers" so it's cheap and easy to produce. My guess is until filming gets back onto a solid schedule, we'll be seeing a lot of stupid shows coming out.
