YouTube is only worthy for the few moments of mindless hilarity I use it for.
The shift of culture from that of a written base to that of a visual one seems to be a contributing factor in the dumbing of society. As I see it, people who lack the ambition to figure things out for themselves and actually analyze stories and points of view are beginning to make important decisions based on the opinions of those delivering the news. A lack of discretion can only breed bad things to come.
Okay, well before I write a novel ... I have final projects to tackle.

My answer, and I think you hint at it, is that unlike any other generation before us, it is not necessarily that we have to make a concerted effort to lift our prose and ban popular media (though it'd help), but that we have to make deconstructing the media's messages a part of our children's education.
Our generation is able to do this somewhat because we sort of "grew up" as media grew up, and we've seen how its tricks have come into being. However, we will need to actively help our children to, as you say,
"decide for [themselves] what’s worth becoming a part of [them]."

But I'm just angry because I've been in too many meetings.
That, and I continue to rest easy in the knowledge that the flu will kill us all first anyway.
