Day 107: Speed Racer Review

I saw Speed Racer recently in glorious IMAX, not because I had any deep desire to find out if Speed and the rest of the Racer family were going to make it.  Nothing in the trailer really turned me off aside from the part of a movie where a knife wheel and a shield wheel duel, but nothing really made it must see.  I basically saw it because a friend ( Read more... )

I too thought Speed Racer was fun. However, the Wachowskis aren't doing anything new visually. They're aping the style of Japanese live action anime films. http://youtube.com/watch?v=WoLkrtbyAlA
They turned the visual volume up a few notches, and they did a good job of it, but yet again, the Wachowskis prove they're great cover artists, not original creators.

I agree about the aping of the styles, but I think the Wachowskis are doing it better. Granted, I probably haven't seen as many of the films that influenced them as you have, but I think their eye and natural knack for pacing action put them way up there.

You're spot on about them being great cover artists, though.

The ninja scene was spoiled by the 'nonja' pun.

I do like that the kid and the monkey were wearing monkey and kid pajamas, though.
